Wednesday, December 07, 2022

The European Commission adopted the programs of the European Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEAMPA) for Romania, under which the country will receive EUR 232 mln (of which EUR 162 mln from the EU) to implement the EU common fisheries policy.

Nearly a quarter (24%) of the Union contribution will be dedicated to sustainable fisheries, 47% will be invested in sustainable aquaculture and processing and marketing, and 23% will be dedicated to the sustainable blue economy in coastal, island and internal regions, all contributing to the EU’s environmental and climate objectives.

IN BRIEF - Fishery exports increase 35% in 9 months on year

Wednesday, February 08, 2023

TEHRAN - The value of Iran’s fishery export has risen 35 percent in the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-December 21, 2022), compared to the same period of time in the past year, according to the secretary of the Aquatics Production and Trade Union of Iran.

According to Ali-Akbar Khodaei, the nine-month fishery export was also 20 percent more than the last year’s figure in terms of weight, IRIB reported.

The official put the total fishery exports in the previous year at 151,000 tons.

Iran’s caviar export, however, has decreased significantly due to the lack of demand in global markets, Khodaei said.

Iranian caviar is mainly exported to European countries, and Arab neighbors including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Oman.

IN BRIEF - Stomper says Fillet-O-Fish price increase higher than inflation, McDonald's says pricing 'competitive'

Tuesday, February 07, 2023

The price of a McDonald's Fillet-O-Fish has raised as much as 23.4 per cent since last year, according to calculations by Stomper Shy Apple.

This is much more than Singapore's core inflation of 5.1 per cent and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) increase from 7 to 8 per cent at the beginning of the year.

"For example, now the Fillet-O-Fish is $3.95 and Double Fillet-O-Fish is $6.70. The Fillet-O-Fish Meal is $6.40 and Double Fillet-O-Fish meal $8.60 with upsizing priced at $1."

In response to a Stomp query, McDonald’s Restaurants Communications Director Linda Ming said: "McDonald’s shares the public’s concerns about rising food prices. Like all retailers, McDonald’s faces rising business costs due to increasing operating costs and inflation.

"While price adjustments may be necessary, our pricing remains competitive and we balance that by offering value on our customers’ favourite menu items, for instance, through value specials on McDonald’ app."

IN BRIEF - Stolen container of shrimp found

Tuesday, February 07, 2023

URK/ANTWERP - A container with 20 tons of black tiger shrimp from the Urker fish importer Dayseaday stolen in Belgium was found in Breda a day and a half later. Several dozen boxes had disappeared. The boxes were printed with Dayseaday.

Dayseaday director Jelle van Veen sounded the alarm on Wednesday afternoon 25 January. The 'fresh water' farmed shrimps came from Bangladesh and were unloaded in Antwerp.

The driver had uncoupled and left the chassis with container outside the city on Tuesday evening, but when a colleague from the Flemish transport company arrived from Ghent, everything had disappeared. All together, the container represented a value of 180,000 euros.

Fortunately, the quality of the shrimps recovered was still good, according to Van Veen. The shrimps were destined for the British market.

Other Media | iPac.acuicultura: Seafood Algternative, algae-based fish substitutes

Tuesday, February 07, 2023

The Seafood Algternative project is developing algae-based fish substitutes with support from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. As reported by DG-Mare, the project team has been working since 2021 to convert the colours, flavors and textures of algae into an alternative to animal protein. The scope of application in this case is very wide; in fact, they have managed to produce everything from alternatives to smoked salmon and canned tuna, to taramosalata, a typical dish from Greece and Turkey whose main element is fish roe.

One of the successes of the project lies in the perfect combination between the algae and the finished products. This initiative "is definitely part of the 'algae revolution'," says DG-Mare.
