Other Media | WWF:MSC certification of bluefin tuna fishery before stocks have recovered sets dangerous precedent

Saturday, August 01, 2020

Rome, Italy - The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), has just announced its first eco-certification of an Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery, while admitting it will take a minimum of five years for the population numbers of the species to return to healthy levels [1]. WWF opposes the certification, believing it will hinder the full recovery of one of the world’s most valuable fish stocks.

After a two-year consultation and an objection filed by WWF, the adjudicator did not uphold the objections against the MSC certification for bluefin tuna granted to a Japanese fishery.

Europeche has issued a statement in which it asks the European Commission to take into account the measures already applied in the Mediterranean before introducing new closures since "an effective implementation of the Multi-Annual Management Plan (MAP) of demersal fisheries in the Mediterranean Occidental requires a better understanding of the status of demersal populations, including juveniles and spawners. " Europêche recalls that before proposing new measures or even considering cuts in fishing effort, "it is essential to assess the effects of the restrictions recently imposed by the Mediterranean MAP".

Thursday, October 29, 2020

Algae oil rich in omega-3 can successfully replace fish oil in the diet of farm-raised juvenile California yellowtail, research shows.

The study, led by scientists at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) in California, also revealed that algae oil can produce fish with levels of two important omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, around three times higher than in fish fed fish oil.

“These results show the potential for this species to be reared on fishmeal and fish-oil free diets,” said Kevin Stuart, a research scientist at HSWRI and lead author of the study.
