IN BRIEF - Shenzhen Pengcheng Marine Products Further Commits to BAP

Wednesday, April 08, 2020

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) and Shenzhen Pengcheng Marine Products Co. Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) whereby the Chinese company has furthered its commitment to the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification program, GAA announced in early April.

Pengcheng is already sourcing shrimp from Vietnam and salmon and mussels from Chile that originate from BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills. With the MoU, Pengcheng has pledged to source more seafood from BAP-certified facilities, expanding the availability of BAP product in the Chinese market.

Pengcheng, which distributes seafood to more than 300 high-end hotels in 70-plus Chinese cities, is committed to providing healthy, safe seafood to Chinese consumers. Food safety is one of the four pillars of BAP, the world’s largest and most comprehensive aquaculture certification program. All facilities are audited annually against a stringent set of food-safety and sanitation guidelines to attain BAP certification. The other three pillars of the BAP program are environmental responsibility, social accountability, and animal health and welfare.

Thursday, May 28, 2020

The national program "To Eat Fish", which promotes healthy eating, attached to the Ministry of Production of Peru (Produce) reported that, so far in the state of emergency, it has managed to place 231,786 kilos of fish throughout the country . "In this way, the program also seeks to increase the supply of fishery resources in coordination with various actors in the fish production chain, such as artisanal fishermen and fish farmers," the authority said in a statement.

"We seek to generate in our population a culture of healthy eating based on fish, which is why we promote its consumption at least three times a week. These activities also represent support for local artisanal fishermen and fish farmers as soon as their production is commercialized, ”said Félix Fabián Puente de la Vega, executive coordinator of the national“ Eat Fish ”program.

Other Media | SeafoodSource: Russian shipyard delays put investment quota programs at risk

Thursday, May 28, 2020

The implementation of the Russian government’s ambitious plan to upgrade its national fishery fleet through an investment-quota incentive program – which ties quota allocations to investments in new ships at Russian shipyards – is likely going to be delayed, as companies in the country aren’t capable of constructing the vessels in timeframe outlined in the program's bylaws.

The incentive program was launched by the government in 2016, and allocates additional quotas for some species to certain companies, if those companies have a ship of certain specifications built at a Russian shipyard within six years. The additional quota is given to the company for 15 years, but only upon the commissioning of the vessel.

Wednesday, May 27, 2020

When Russia closed its borders because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Norwegian company Helgeland Plast had to rethink how to delivering salmon cages to its neighbours in the east. The solution was for a to team to drive over 1300 kilometres to have the cages put together and then picked up by a Russian tugboat.

“COVID-19 brought with it a great deal of uncertainty about our activities, both on the customer side and the supplier side. All the measures that were implemented, either by the government or the municipalities, changed our surroundings in such a way that we had to create some scenarios of situations that could potentially arise,” said Petter Jørgensen to SalmonBusiness.

According to a statement by a group of nine UK Fish Producer Organisations, the slump in demand for nephrops due to the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated an already precarious over-supply situation in the UK nephrops (langoustine) sector.

Higher than normal landings volumes of whole prawns and prawn tails due to good fishing throughout 2019 had already begun to have negative effects on market prices during the first quarter of 2020, before the effects of the lockdowns in domestic and export markets fully took hold.

Throughout April and into May, most nephrops vessels have been tied up and most factories have remained closed.

Tuesday, May 26, 2020

The introduction of grouper aquaculture in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could be “economically sound, environmentally beneficial, and socially enhancing”.

So concludes a newly published study into the potential impacts of culturing orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides). One of the most popular fish species in the UAE, the paper notes, it “has been pushed to the brink of extinction” by overexploitation of wild stocks, making the case for developing an aquaculture sector for the species all the more relevant.
