IN BRIEF - Qatar Announces Major Expansion of Aquatic Fishery Research Centre

QATAR
Tuesday, August 26, 2025

Doha — The Public Works Authority of Qatar (Ashghal), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, is set to award a key consultancy contract for the extension of the Aquatic Fishery Research Centre in Ras Al Matbakh. The contract, which includes design and supervision services, is expected to be finalized in September 2025.

The project is a scientific centre specialized in environment research and fish breeding.

The expansion project will add 11,200 square meters to the existing facility, significantly boosting its capabilities. New features will include:

  • fish nursery with an annual production of 3.5 million fingerlings.

  • grow-out unit designed to produce 115,000 kg of market-size fish per year.

  • Advanced research and development (R&D) facilities.

  • Dedicated units for feed preparation, sorting, and packaging, along with comprehensive waste management systems.

According to a source close to the project, the expansion is slated for completion by December 2026. This initiative is a crucial step for Qatar's efforts to enhance its food security and advance aquaculture technology.

PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES
Monday, August 25, 2025

For centuries, the Mediterranean Sea has been a source of life and sustenance for the people of Gaza. Fishing not only constituted a means of subsistence for thousands of families but also represented an essential element of the local culture and economy. However, in the last three decades, this sector has undergone a process of restriction and destruction that has brought it to the brink of extinction, with dramatic consequences for both food security and the dignity of the population.

The starting point of this transformation can be traced to the 1993 Oslo Accords, which recognized Palestinian fishermen's right to fish up to a maximum of 20 nautical miles.

A committed Conservative, he also frequently attacks the government over its general policy on aquaculture.

He told the regional newspaper Bergens Tidende at the weekend: “I’m Mother Teresa. I just take the money and give it back to the people.
