Other Media | aqua.cl: Salmon Within Consumer Reach: Producers consolidate their Presence through owned stores

CHILE
Monday, July 28, 2025

For years, the bulk of Chilean salmon production has been oriented toward international markets. However, recently, some of the leading production companies have begun to look at the domestic market with a different perspective. Australis, Camanchaca, and Invermar, three key players in the sector, have firmly committed to opening their own stores, which will allow them not only to improve brand positioning but also to connect directly with local consumers.

Behind this strategy lies more than a search for commercial diversification. According to company executives, there is a concrete need to contribute to improving Chilean families' access to highly nutritious proteins, in a context where the price of salmon has historically been perceived as high and its consumption comparatively low compared to other producing countries.

Other media | MundoAcuicola: Economic and nutritional effects warned of due to inaccurate labeling on canned horse mackerel

CHILE
Friday, July 25, 2025

Following the discovery that certain brands were selling cans of horse mackerel that actually contain mackerel, Spanish sardines, or other species imported from China, University of La Serena academic Cristian Araya-Jaime, PhD, clarified that rather than a health risk, it represents a lower nutritional value.

“Horse mackerel is considered a superfood due to its protein content, its bioavailability of vitamins, iron, proteins, and omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids, which contribute, among other things, to the development of the nervous system in minors, all for a low price,” the academic stated.

SPAIN

The Spanish fishing sector applauds the Government's decision to appeal the EU General Court's ruling on the closure of 87 fishing zones.

The Spanish fishing sector, represented by the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA), welcomes the decision announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), Luis Planas, to appeal to the Court of Justice of the EU against the ruling of the General Court of the European Union (GCEU). This ruling dismissed the appeals filed by the Kingdom of Spain and the Fisheries Producers Organization (OPP) of Puerto de Burela, supported by the Xunta de Galicia (Government of Galicia), against Implementing Regulation 2022/1614, which closed 87 areas in the northeast Atlantic to bottom fishing gear.

The sector applauds this decision, believing it represents a firm step in defending the rationality and proportionality that must be considered when adopting environmental measures that directly affect the socioeconomic sustainability of our fleets.

Fishmeal and fish oil production for May were down year on year, according to the international marine ingredients organisation IFFO. Meanwhile, the authorities in Peru have brought an end to the anchovy season in the north-central region, to protect spawning fish.

According to IFFO’s market intelligence reports, the total cumulative fishmeal production in May this year decreased by approximately 2% compared to the same period in 2024. This decline was mainly driven by lower output in Peru and Northern European countries. All other regions reported year-on-year growth in fishmeal production over the same period.
