The general secretary of theSpanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA), Javier Garat, has been appointed president of the Spanish Maritime Cluster, an organization that represents all economic activities, institutions, associations and companies that have a relationship with the sea, and whose objective is extend and improve the so-called blue economy, acting as a communication vehicle for the sector with the Government and public administrations.
Garat has a degree in Law and a diploma in Community Law from the Complutense University of Madrid (C.E.U. San Pablo) and a Master's degree in International and European Law from the Catholic University of Leuven (U.C.L. Belgium). The new president of the Spanish Maritime Cluster, a full academician of the Royal Academy of the Sea, has an extensive career in the field of fishing that began in 1996 when he joined the team of the Legal Service of the European Commission and as assistant to the Fisheries Counselor of the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union.
Peruvian seafood exports totaled US$ 2,977 million between January and August 2026, representing a 13.3% drop compared to the same period of the previous year, according to figures from the Association of Exporters (ADEX).
The trade association warned that shipments would close the year in the red due to the impact of El Niño, pointing out that up to 80,000 jobs linked to the industry could be at risk if the stoppage of part of the fleet is prolonged.

In an unprecedented ruling, Judge Mariel E. Borruto of the Federal Court of First Instance of Río Grande assumed full territorial and subject-matter jurisdiction in case FCR 16446/2026, titled 'Fundación Agustina Lerena v. Pesquera Moradiña SL et al. on Collective Amparo'.
The decision affirms the plaintiff's environmental legal standing and orders preliminary investigative measures before ruling on an urgent injunction to halt illegal fishing in the waters of the Malvinas, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands. The ruling—aligned with legal opinions 320/2026 and 341/2026 by Federal Prosecutor Marcelo Rapoport—reaffirms the sovereign jurisdiction of the Argentine Republic over its Exclusive Economic Zone under Laws 24.922, 23.968, and 24.400.
The collective lawsuit, led by Dr. César Augusto Lerena and represented by constitutional attorney Dr. Eduardo Salvador Barcesat, claims up to US$ 26,464 million against 12 Galician fishing companies, 7 colonial-flagged joint ventures, 4 banks, 3 shipyards, and insurers. To assess the requested injunction, the court has officially incorporated scientific reports from INIDEP and satellite tracking records from the Argentine Naval Prefecture's Guardacostas system.

Norwegian seafood exports developed in different directions in October. While the export value of salmon reached an all-time high, both export volumes and values declined for wild-caught species such as cod, mackerel and haddock. Despite higher export prices for cod, mackerel, trout, saithe, herring and prawns, a stronger Norwegian krone contributed to the total export value remaining at the same level as last year
In 2025, the UK exported 483,001 tonnes of seafood worth £2 billion – but it also imported seafood worth £4.1 billion, with imports totalling 1,180,000 tonnes by volume.
The figures come from Seafood in Numbers, the latest annual summary of the UK’s seafood trade from Seafish, the public body set up to promote and develop the sector.
Compared to 2024, export value increased by 1% while export volume decreased by 2%, equivalent to around 10,000 fewer tonnes of seafood. £810 million was exported to France. The largest exported species, in both volume and value, was salmon.

Greenpeace has launched a new offensive against bottom trawling through two separate actions: one in Marín (Pontevedra) and another in the northeast of the United Kingdom—specifically in the Dogger Bank area, in the southern North Sea, about 100 kilometers off the British northeast coast. According to the NGO itself, activists painted the words "ocean killer" on the hull of a New Zealand-bound trawler currently under construction at the Nodosa Shipyard in Marín. The vessel, which is 79 meters long and officially named *Voyager*, was targeted by activists who emblazoned it with the phrase "ocean killer." The city of Busan announced that the 24th Busan International Fisheries Expo (BISFE 2026) will be held from April 4 to 6 at Hall 1 of BEXCO, located in Haeundae-gu.
Recognized as the region's leading professional trade show for the sector, the exhibition spans seafood, equipment, smart aquaculture, and marine biotechnology.
The event is organized by the Busan Metropolitan Government, co-managed by BEXCO and the Korea Fisheries Trade Association, and sponsored by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Internationally certified by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) since 2008, this edition will bring together 506 companies from 32 countries across 1,300 booths. SalMar, the world's second largest Atlantic salmon farmer, achieved an operating profit of NOK 1.609 billion (£127.8 million) in the third quarter of 2026, a sharp increase from NOK 711 million in the same period last year. The profit per kilo increased from NOK 7.6 to NOK 15.3, while the harvest volume rose from 93,200 gutted weight tonnes to a record high of 105,100 gwt.
In Norway, the company harvested 99,900 gwt, compared to 89,400 gwt in the third quarter of 2025. The operating profit increased from NOK 858m to NOK 1.620bn, while the EBIT per kilogram rose from NOK 9.6 to NOK 16.2.

Somali pirates hijacked an Iranian fishing vessel with 23 people aboard, according to the Maritime Security Center Indian Ocean.
The incident took place 29 October, according to the Associated Press, with the pirates allegedly taking over the vessel between the Somali towns of Bandar Bayla and Hafun. On 1 November, a Puntland Maritime Police Force told the publication that the vessel – which had 21 Iranian crew members aboard along with two Somali security guards – was taken over by 12 pirates.
The status of the crew is unknown, and the Maritime Security Center Indian Ocean warned that the vessel – which was heading toward a commercial fishing lane – could be used as a “mother ship” to launch attacks on other commercial vessels in the area.
