This strategic deployment directly addresses the growing demands of major retail chains in Europe and North America

Thai Union Group Shields Sustainability of Its Global Tuna Supply Chain

  (THAILAND, 6/16/2026)

The Asian multinational presents the progress report of its Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), achieving that 84% of its tuna purchases originate from certified fisheries or those undergoing active audit processes.

BANGKOK – Through an official communication addressed to market analysts and international investors, the Thai giant Thai Union Group has presented the operational update of its global responsible sourcing strategy for its canning and ready-to-eat seafood lines. The technical report highlights that the company has consolidated its full traceability goal, with 84% of its total tuna purchase volume—including key species such as skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), and bigeye (Thunnus obesus)—originating from fisheries holding Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification or actively integrated into verified Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs).

This strategic deployment directly addresses the growing demands of major retail chains in Europe and North America, which have tightened their corporate procurement policies, penalizing suppliers who cannot document the eradication of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in their catches. Through the implementation of electronic monitoring onboard and blockchain-based automated weighing systems across its main processing plants in Asia, Africa, and Europe, the corporation has optimized batch physical segregation, guaranteeing a airtight chain of custody from the moment of the haul on the high seas to final can sealing at distribution centers.

At the fleet operations level, the report details progress achieved in the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific, regions where Thai Union Group co-leads working groups with local vessel owners and public administrations to reduce the impact of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs). The corporation is financing the transition toward the exclusive use of non-entangling, biodegradable FADs—a technological measure designed to mitigate the incidental catch of non-target species such as sharks and sea turtles, whose undeclared discard has historically been one of the most criticized areas by blue economy environmental organizations. This fishing gear conversion features a specific enforcement budget audited quarterly by independent third parties.

Despite the costs associated with technological conversion and satellite monitoring programs for the supplying fleet, the multinational's financial management emphasized that these sustainability programs act as a commercial shield against spot price volatility of raw materials. By securing a constant flow of certified and ethically harvested biomass, the company protects its net export margins and consolidates its position as a preferred strategic partner for premium private labels, isolating its corporate structure from the reputational risks that affect operators depending on traditional, low-traceability supply chains.

The breakdown of internal custody control audit fees and reference price premiums per ton of certified resource governing the company's procurement operations as of today's commercial day is presented below:

The corporation concluded by reaffirming its commitment to its long-term sustainability roadmap (SeaChange 2030), which includes a global investment destined for marine restoration projects and logistical chain decarbonization. Thai Union Group executive authorities reminded that the global viability of the seafood business depends directly on the biological health of the oceans. Therefore, continuing to drive fishery improvement projects in developing regions is not merely an exercise in social responsibility, but a critical strategic investment to secure the supply of high-quality, homogeneous marine protein that the global population will demand over the coming decades.
