BioMar is significantly expanding its research and development operations at the Aquaculture Technology Centre (ATC) in Hirtshals, Denmark. This strategic move aims to bolster the company’s global portfolio by integrating new species, specifically focusing on the scientific requirements of Yellowtail Kingfish and Barramundi to deliver precision nutritional solutions across international markets.

A Powerhouse of European Aquaculture Research

As the largest facility within the BioMar network and one of the most sophisticated in Europe, ATC Hirtshals serves as the backbone for the company's innovation. The site is equipped with:

• 15 experimental trial units.

• 27 recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).

• Over 350 individual tanks for large-scale, controlled testing.

The center leverages over 30 years of experience in supplying Seabass and Seabream producers and 20 years of dedicated trials in Hirtshals. This deep expertise in Mediterranean marine species provides the foundation for expanding into more diverse biological and geographical sectors.

From Cold-Water Roots to Tropical Frontiers

While the facility was originally known for its work with cold-water species like Salmon and Trout, it has pivoted toward the growing demand for warm-water aquaculture. Following successful trials with Yellowtail Kingfish—a species vital to BioMar’s interests in Europe and Australia—the center is now prioritizing Barramundi.

This species is identified as a massive growth opportunity in Southeast Asia and Australia. Upcoming projects will focus on:

• Developing specialized feeding strategies.

• Enhancing biological performance.

• Refining predictive models for fish growth and health.
