(INDONESIA, 10/1/2026)
The Japanese firm consolidates its expansion in Southeast Asia backed by state bank financing and plans to start commercial operations with Halal certification in September 2027
The Japanese leader in specialized seafood and seaweed trading, Koasa Shoji (headquartered in Nagoya), formally began construction of a new nori seaweed processing plant in Indonesia on September 29, 2026. The new facility is located in the industrial area of Cikarang Barat, in the Bekasi Regency, West Java Province, and is operated through the local subsidiary PT Koasa International Indonesia (KII). The subsidiary was formally established by Yamako Co., Ltd. —a group company headquartered in Aichi Prefecture, led by President and CEO Kiyomasa Shirahane and founded in November 1974, renowned for its seaweed (Pyropia / Porphyra) drying and freezing technologies—.

This construction phase follows the coordinated financial backing in October 2025, when the group secured a joint loan of 100 million yen (approximately 670,000 US$). This package included 70 million yen co-financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and 30 million yen from Mizuho Bank, Inc., at an estimated interest rate of 1.5% annually, designated for the primary infrastructure of the industrial complex.

The plant will produce roasted seaweed sheets (Yaki Nori) and seasoned seaweed (Ajitsuke Nori) targeted at both general consumer markets as well as the Horeca and industrial food processing channels. In addition to serving the growing Indonesian domestic demand driven by Japanese cuisine consumption, Koasa Shoji will process Halal certification to position Indonesia as a strategic export hub for processed seafood products to other markets in the Islamic world and the Southeast Asian region.
