SeaMe develops self-releasing buoy technology to eradicate ghost gear and protect marine resources

A Nordic alliance tests an innovative automatic tracking system for lost fishing equipment, combining marine sustainability, waste reduction, and economic efficiency for the commercial fishing sector

The SeaMe initiative, a joint project led by Sotenäs Municipality, the technology firm CMAR AB, and the Nordic Fishermen's Association, is advancing the testing and verification of a self-releasing buoy system designed to locate and recover lost fishing gear at sea. This technology aims to eradicate the issue of "ghost fishing"—a phenomenon caused by abandoned or lost nets, traps, and pots that continue to capture and kill marine species indefinitely—thereby reducing environmental damage to oceanic ecosystems and preventing direct financial losses for fishing crews.

The mechanism of SeaMe features a user-defined automatic activation: attached directly to fishing gear, the device releases a buoy to the surface if the equipment is not retrieved within a specified period. The buoy remains tethered to the gear, marking its exact coordinates with high surface visibility to enable rapid recovery. Among its technical specifications, the system incorporates low or neutral underwater buoyancy to maintain operational efficiency, reduced underwater visibility, and high attachment versatility suitable for various equipment weights, sizes, and operational depths.

Recently, the project team visited the CMAR facilities in Fiskebäck to inspect the engineering progress of the device, a process encompassing printed circuit board construction, 3D design, and stress testing for demanding marine environments. Following initial trials in lobster harvesting, developers plan to deliver the next batch of units for commercial validation during the 2027 lobster fishing season. The program seeks to establish a circular model for fishing equipment, facilitate compliance with environmental regulations, and safeguard populations of fish, crabs, and lobsters.

SeaMeの機構は、ユーザーが設定した時間内に漁具が引き揚げられない場合、自動的にブイを海面へ放出する機能を備えています。放出されたブイは漁具と連結した状態を維持し、高い視認性で正確な位置を標識することで迅速な回収を可能にします。技術的特徴として、水中での漁獲効率を損なわない低・中性浮力設計、水中での低視認性、さまざまな重量・サイズ・水深の刺し網やトラップに対応する汎用性の高い装着機構が挙げられます。

プロジェクトチームは最近、Fiskebäck（フィスケベック）にあるCMARの施設を視察し、基板設計、3Dデザインから過酷な海洋環境に耐えうる試験まで、装置の精密な製造工程を確認しました。エビ・ロブスター漁での初期テストを経て、2027年のロブスター漁期における商業的検証に向け、次期ロットユニットの供給が計画されています。本プログラムは、漁具の循環型利用の確立、環境規制の遵守推進、ならびに魚類、カニ、ロブスターなどの水産資源の保護を目指しています。
