Bendito Mar Becomes First Mexican Farm to Join ASC Improver Programme

Baja California Sur cooperative launches Aquaculture Improvement Project to strengthen environmental and social performance in regenerative bivalve mollusc farming

Bahía Magdalena, Baja California Sur – Mexican cooperative Bendito Mar, specialized in the regenerative farming of bivalve molluscs, has officially joined the Improver Programme by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). With this step, the entity becomes the first farm in Mexico to participate in an Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP) driven by the global organization.

Founded in 2018 in the region of Bahía Magdalena, Baja California Sur, Bendito Mar produces oysters, Catarina scallops, chocolate clams, and pen shells under a sustainable approach. Through the ASC Improver Programme, the cooperative will initiate a structured plan aimed at consolidating the social and environmental management of its oyster production, progressing step by step toward compliance with the international ASC certification standards.

Patricia Bianchi, LATAM and Governance Manager at ASC, highlighted the impact of the local producer's model, noting that its regenerative approach demonstrates the key role aquaculture can play in restoring marine ecosystems, delivering nutritious food, and creating opportunities for coastal communities. She also reaffirmed the organization's commitment to supporting the cooperative through its continuous improvement journey.

Meanwhile, the General Director of Bendito Mar, Alan Antonio Espinoza Gorozave, emphasized that joining the program marks a turning point for the organization. He stated that responsible aquaculture goes beyond seafood production, requiring processes, human teams, and a culture focused on generating positive environmental impacts, ensuring dignified working conditions, strengthening traceability, and promoting transparency. Espinoza Gorozave expressed pride in leading the country into this initiative and taking on the responsibility to show that responsible and transparent aquaculture models can be built in Mexico.

Bendito Mar's production model leverages the natural water-filtering capacity of oysters, directly contributing to water quality, carbon sequestration, and local biodiversity enhancement. This commitment to regenerative aquaculture and community development earned national recognition in 2026, when the cooperative won first place in the Rural Aquaculture category of Mexico's National Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Award.

The ASC Improver Programme is designed to support aquaculture producers that are not yet ready or eligible for ASC certification but demonstrate a firm commitment to assessing their current status, addressing operational gaps, and implementing improved environmental and social practices across their regions.
