Zenma Sanma announced the total of saury landings for the 2023 fishing season as of the end of November. The amount of fish landed was 24,046 tons (35% increase compared to the same period last year), returning to the 20,000-ton level for the first time in three years since the 2020 fishing season (final 29,566 tons). However, because the average unit price was 30% lower, the value of the fish landed was 10,007,971,000 yen (3% decrease), lower than the previous fishing season.
In November, a single month increase of 8,575 tons (25% increase) was achieved. In addition to being visible off the coast of Sanriku in late October, schools of fish have been seen off the Sea of ??Okhotsk in Hokkaido, and for the first time in a long time, a major fishing ground has been formed in the waters near Japan. For the past two years, only large vessels were able to fish for saury, mainly in international waters, but small and medium-sized vessels are now able to fish for saury for the first time in three years.
The total was about 14,000 tons, including about 6,000 tons from the Sea of ??Okhotsk fishing grounds and about 8,000 tons off the coast of Sanriku. Canadians will pay dearly for their government’s policy on net pen salmon farming in British Columbia, a report has warned.
The tax burden could soar to CAN $9bn (£5bn), according to an economic impact assessment by the Canadian consulting firm RIAS Inc.
The report, commissioned by the BC Salmon Farmers Association, concludes that the ban announced in June by Justin Trudeau’s government, and the proposed draft transition plan, would result in at least $9bn in unnecessary costs to Canadian taxpayers to compensate for the sector’s closure, and to subsidise unproven closed containment technology companies.

Faroese salmon producer Bakkafrost has launched an online store for the Danish market, allowing consumers to purchase its premium salmon products directly from the company.
The new platform, available at bakkafrostshop.com, features a range of offerings, including salmon fillets and portions (both fresh and frozen), smoked salmon in various styles, and specialty items from Munkebo, such as salmon in olive oil and vegetable soups.

South Korea's import volume of frozen capelin plummeted by a significant 75% in October 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
The country imported only 70 tons in October 2024, down from 278 tons the previous year. Consequently, the cumulative import volume for the year reached 731 tons, a 32% decrease from 2023.

Norway’s 25% extra tax on salmon farmers appears to be here to stay, the latest pronouncements from the country’s opposition politicians indicate.
