UK industry body Seafish has created a “Vessels of the Future Forum” help aquaculture vessels and fishing boats transition to net zero.

The newly formed forum brings together representatives from the fishing and the fish farming industry, boat builders and surveyors, ports and harbours, engine manufacturers, research community and governments.

It is being chaired by Mike Cohen, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations.

Seafood Expo Eurasia Business Program: from Global Trends to Local Solutions

Istanbul, – Seafood Expo Eurasia will present an extensive program addressing the primary challenges and opportunities in the global seafood industry. Designed with a business focus, it aims not only to discuss worldwide fisheries main issues but also to find common solutions that consider the regional specificities of different markets.

Despite global trends, each market has distinctive features crucial for achieving global sustainable development. This is the reason organizers have decided to supplement the program with events dedicated separately to the markets of Türkiye, Eurasia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Simultaneously, the program's focal points will center around sessions on the Blue Transformation, sustainable fishing practices, and the traceability of fish products. These factors are capable of ensuring climate-neutral fishing and the renewability of fish stocks, and are also becoming the main drivers for the promotion of fish and seafood. The global leading expert organizations will take an active part in the events, sharing their knowledge, ideas, and insights.

To foster an inclusive and meaningful discussion, the organizers invite official bodies, professional and trade associations, business and scientific structures, as well as industry media, to participate in the business program events and contribute to shaping its agenda.

IN BRIEF - 100,000 fish died in RAS facilities

The Canadian farming company Sustainable Blue lost 100,000 Atlantic salmon as a result of faulty equipment.

This is reported by the online newspaper undercurrentnews.com

Kirk Havercoft, managing director of Sustainable Blue, says new deliveries from the RAS facility will be halted for about seven months, as all remaining fish have not yet reached harvestable size.

The incident happened on 4 November, and is said to be due to a construction fault.

IN BRIEF - Jala nets $13.1m for aquaculture service boost

Jala, an Indonesia-based aquatech startup, has raised US$13.1 million in a series A round led by Intudo Ventures, with participation from Sinar Mas Digital Ventures as well as existing investors Mirova and Meloy Fund.

The funding will help Jala improve its platform with more in-depth predictions for cultivation performance, water quality, and shrimp disease. It also aims to boost its automated data input capabilities for shrimp weight and feed data.

Founded in 2017 by Aryo Wiryawan and Liris Maduningtyas, Jala’s app enables farmers to record, monitor, and analyze their shrimp farm activities in real time. The firm said that so far, it has helped monitor shrimp across more than 35,000 water bodies for its nearly 20,000 users

The company also offers a credit scoring service, Jala Smartfarm, which gives farmers access to financing options. Meanwhile, its Jala Harvest offering helps farmers bring their products to market.[...]

The general secretary of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA), Javier Garat, has been appointed president of the Spanish Maritime Cluster, an organization that represents all economic activities, institutions, associations and companies that have a relationship with the sea, and whose objective is extend and improve the so-called blue economy, acting as a communication vehicle for the sector with the Government and public administrations.
 
Garat has a degree in Law and a diploma in Community Law from the Complutense University of Madrid (C.E.U. San Pablo) and a Master's degree in International and European Law from the Catholic University of Leuven (U.C.L. Belgium). The new president of the Spanish Maritime Cluster, a full academician of the Royal Academy of the Sea, has an extensive career in the field of fishing that began in 1996 when he joined the team of the Legal Service of the European Commission and as assistant to the Fisheries Counselor of the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union.
 
Javier Garat is also president of the Association of Producer Organizations PESCA ESPAÑA, president of the Association of National Organizations of Fishing Companies of the EU (Europêche) and also presides over the International Coalition of Fisheries Associations (ICFA). Call to enhance blue finance for innovations in aquaculture

In view of a range of critical threats posed by climate change and increasing demand for food and nutritional security, Simon Feunge-Smith, Senior Fishery Officer of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) has called for enhancing blue finance for innovations and developments in the aquaculture sector. 

He was speaking at a technical session on ‘Emerging Challenges and Opportunities in Inland Aquaculture’ at the Global Fisheries Conference India 2023. 

According to him, global aquaculture will provide 59% of fish for human consumption by 2030. He emphasised the need to prioritise low carbon footprint aquaculture systems with high value nutrition, saying that technological advancements and investments are required for a sustainable growth of the sector.

Global blue sector has changed over the past 25 years, with 37% higher per capita fish consumption and 250% higher aquaculture production, the FAO expert said [...]

A study carried out by a research team from the University of Santiago de Compostela, commissioned by the Xunta de Galicia, has calculated that the reduction of VAT from 10 to 5% on fishing products sold directly to the final consumer would generate an increase of 28 .5 million euros in added value, the creation of 5,575 jobs, and a decrease of 17.8 million euros in tax collection.

The study transfers the VAT reduction demanded by the Xunta to several assumptions to project what impact the measure would have if put into practice through the analysis of the behavior of the Galician economy at a macro and micro level.

By 23 votes in favor, none against and 1 abstention, the MEPs of the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament have approved an update of the control measures of the ICCAT area and the multiannual management plan for bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

The agreement also refers to capacity limitations. The Fisheries Commission reports that each EU country should have its annual plan by January 31, managing the capacity of its longline and purse seine fleet and taking into account the limits to catch tropical tunas.

Yesterday a Virgin Atlantic plane carried out the first transatlantic flight fuelled entirely by sustainable aviation fuel – and it was carrying a cargo of salmon from the Faroe Islands.

The consignment of fresh salmon came from Faroese producer Bakkafrost, which said its participation in the flight was part of the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The trial flight was carried out in collaboration with Virgin Atlantic and distributors Kuehne + Nagel.

Måsøval has confirmed it is reorganizing and has begun a process to streamline its management and public reporting processes, which will result in different parts of the business splitting into separate legal entities.

As of 1 January 2024, Måsøval will become a holding company, and all the group’s licenses will be merged into one company: Måsøval Lisens. The group’s farming operations will be a part of Måsøval Drift, the company stated in its Q3 2023 financial report.

Five counties in Norway account for almost 90% of all value creation in the Norwegian seafood industry, with Nordland County as number one, generating over 20 billion in value creation and ripple effects, followed by Vestland, Troms og Finnmark, Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag.

Last week, Nofima launched their annual report on the positive impacts of the seafood industry. Value creation in the seafood industry increased by 36% last year, amounting to NOK 71 billion. If the ripple effects from the industry are taken into account, the total value creation was NOK 109 billion.
