From being sanctioned as an administrative infraction, with uncollectible fines because the perpetrators declared themselves insolvent, poaching became a criminal offense seven years ago. With this typification, from time to time, sentences of economic convictions, disqualifications to work and some prison sentences transcend. Alone and, increasingly, in organized groups, this bloodletting for shellfishing and fishing seems to have no end.

Fish farmers on the Faroe Islands could be next to face higher government taxes, it emerged today.
Bakkafrost, the country’s largest salmon farmer has issued a statement warning that administrators are working on proposals to adjust revenue taxes to reflect the recent high increases in salmon prices.

The federal agency that ensures the safety of the food supply in the United States plans to update its definition of “healthy” in the context of packaged-food labels, paving the way for salmon and other nutrient dense foods to qualify for the “healthy” claim.
Under the definition set in 1994 by the Food and Drug Administration, salmon does not qualify for the “healthy” claim because it has high levels of fat, while cereal qualifies because it has vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, protein and fibre, even though it is loaded with sugar.

Over the past week in the Far East, under the influence of excess supply, the downward trend in wholesale prices for Pacific herring has continued, namely, a decrease of 1.8%. The price for 1 kg of frozen herring is 54 rubles per 1 kg. Prices for other types of frozen fish remained virtually unchanged.
In the retail segment this week in the regions of Russia, there is a decrease of 1-2% in average retail prices for canned fish: Iwashi sardine (99.6 rubles against 100.8 last week), Atlantic cod liver (299.2 rubles against 317. 8 last week).
The firm refusal of the Commission to suspend or even review the imminent closure of 87 fishing areas to all bottom gear paves the way for the presentation of an appeal by the State of Spain before the Court of Justice of the European Union. "We will take the measures that we consider appropriate", indicated yesterday the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, during his intervention in the Council of Ministers of Fisheries.

The shipbuilding group VARD has contracted Hydroniq Coolers to deliver the marine seawater cooling system to a newbuild stern trawler it is building for Deutsche Fischfang-Union GmbH & Co. KG in Germany.
Aalesund-based Hydroniq Coolers’ scope of work is to assemble and supply its Rack seawater cooling system to the stern trawler. This type of marine cooling system is integrated in the hull below the main engine room of the vessel.
Marine Scotland has published their Scottish Sea Fisheries Statistics 2021 which provides data on weight and value of sea fish and shellfish landed by fishing vessels, structure of the Scottish fishing fleet and employment on Scottish vessels.
The report show there are signs that some parts of the fishing industry are recovering from the impacts of Covid-19, however there hasn’t been a return to pre-pandemic levels:
