The Global Salmon Initiative, which represents some of the most significant players in the salmon sector, has hailed progress in reducing the use of antibiotics, managing sea lice through holistic methods and reducing marine ingredients in aquafeed, among a range of other sustainability measures.
The GSI membership represents around 40% of global salmon production. The organisation was set up to encourage improvements across the industry and its annual Sustainability Report for 2022 charts achievement on a number of fronts.
Canada's fishing communities do not understand that a moratorium on cod that was to last two years is now up to 30. However, days like this - however hopeful it may seem - may be numbered. This is because Atlantic cod (of which the northern cod is a stock) are nowhere near their former level of abundance. Thirty years ago, in a last-ditch effort to bring cod back from the brink of total collapse, the Canadian government closed the commercial cod fishery.
The octopus extraction campaign begins in Galicia until the start of the 2023 ban, which will be set through the corresponding plan. According to the plan agreed by the Consellería do Mar and the sector, until next August 31, each boat can fish a maximum quota of 30 kilograms per day. To this amount is added 30 kilos per day for each crew member enrolled on board up to a maximum of 210 kilos per day.

Urk, The Netherlands-based Seafood Connection has established a joint venture with Agrofish Italia with the goal of repositioning itself in the Italian seafood market.
The Dutch seafood supplier, owned since 2013 by Tokyo, Japan-based seafood conglomerate Maruha Nichiro, said the move to create Seacon Italia was its “next step” in serving the Italian market, which is the largest purchaser of seafood in Europe and which boasts the fourth-highest seafood consumption level in the European Union, according to EUMOFA data.

Dutch fishermen blocked harbours in the Netherlands today in protest at soaring fuel prices and over the spatial squeeze resulting from offshore energy developments and marine protected areas.
The protest had been organised under “Eendracht maakt Kracht,” (EMK), which translates to “Unity Makes Strength,” also announced protests in locations, such as Lauwersoog harbour, IJmuiden and Den Helder.

Land-based fish farmer Salmon Evolution says the strong biological performance for its first batch of smolts, reported in the company’s Q1 2022 presentation has continued for the remainder of the second quarter.
The company’s initial batch of smolts was released to its on-land fish farm at Indre Harøy, Norway in March this year.
Chile’s environment agency has given salmon producer Multi X 15 days to implement measures for the proper disposal of chemicals it used in its hatchery.
During its investigation of Multi X’s Chaparano Pisciculture hatchery in the Los Lagos Region of Chile, environment agency Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente (SMA) confirmed that the salmon producer used formalin and lufenuron and it constructed an unauthorized bypass for the discharge of the chemicals, reported news outlet Mundo Aquicola on Monday July 4.

Industrial giant Mitsubishi, which owns salmon farming heavyweight Cermaq, is to form a joint venture with fishing and aquaculture company Maruha Nichiro to construct an on-land salmon farm in Japan.
The new company, Atland Corporation, will build the 2,500-tonne capacity recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in the town of Nyuzen in Toyama prefecture and will draw sea water from a depth of 300 metres or more, where the water has a low, stable temperature.

The United Kingdom officially lifted import restrictions on Japanese food products related to radionuclides on 29 June, 2022.
The restrictions on products were introduced after the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which released radiation into the surrounding environment after the East Japan Earthquake.
