Orizon reopens cannery in Coquimbo
(CHILE, 9/17/2016)
In January next year, the company Orizon is planning to reopen the cannery San Jose in Coquimbo, which has been closed since 2013, with an investment of more than CLP 700 million (about USD 1 million).
According to the company, the updating and adaptation changes of the factory have already begun and have advanced 50 per cent.
The activity of the plant will focus on canned horse mackerel, stamp of San Jose brand, of which 200,000 cases are expected to be produced per year (each box containing 24 cans).
Rigoberto Rojo, CEO of Orizon, said the decision to reopen the plant responds to the fact that there are good recovery signs in the horse mackerel fishery, as well as in export market opportunities.
"Of course, this investment is a demonstration of trust in the capabilities of the industrial and the artisanal sectors, as well as trust in the stability under the conditions to continue working," stressed the entrepreneur.
He also noted that this decision is in line with the strategy of Orizon to put more emphasis on the human consumption product line.
The company expects that reopening Coquimbo plant will directly benefit artisanal fishermen in northern Chile and have a positive impact on the development of the region as it will create about 200 jobs.
Orizon was created in December 2010, following the merger of Pesquera San José and SouthPacific Korp (SPK), and is part of Empresas Copec Group, a business conglomerate with investments in forestry, fisheries and energy sectors.
