BEWI Introduces New EPS Grades and Fish Boxes with 60% Lower CO2 Footprint

  (SWEDEN, 4/29/2024)
BEWI, a leader in sustainable packaging, components, and insulation solutions, announces the introduction of new EPS (expanded polystyrene) raw material grades and EPS fish boxes with up to 60 per cent lower CO2 footprint, both based on recycled feedstock, facilitating climate reduction targets.

“Delivering sustainable packaging solutions have long been a top priority for us in BEWI. We strive to always offer our customers innovative and cost-efficient solutions, while at the same time focusing on the key aspects of a circular economy. Our fish boxes are already recyclable – and are being recycled. The introduction of fish boxes with reduced CO2 footprint enables us to further reduce emissions,” says Stein Inge Liasjø, EVP and Head of BEWI’s packaging segment.

Made of EPS that insulates and keeps the inside temperature steady even during long-distance transports.

The new range of fish boxes is part of BEWI’s product line called GreenLine, which includes the company’s products with recycled content and lower carbon footprint. GreenLine fish boxes are produced by using Circulum® Balance, a new EPS raw material grade from BEWI based on recycled feedstock.

Increases the use of recycled feedstock

Circulum® Balance facilitates CO2 savings in industries requiring conventional material, or where the use of recycled material is not yet feasible, for example in packaging for food and pharmaceuticals. By using the mass balance approach, BEWI can increase the use of recycled feedstock and offer customers an alternative to reducing their environmental impact.

EPS is 98% air, which makes the boxes light and helps lower transport costs.

BEWI has invested significantly in circular capabilities since 2018. BEWI collects and recycles feedstock from used EPS packaging and insulation, such as fish boxes and construction debris, closing the loop for EPS as valuable packaging in the seafood industry. Last year, the company collected 27 000 tonnes of used EPS for recycling. BEWI’s facilities are certified by REDcert, an independent third party auditing the material flow and the mass balance approach.

“BEWI’s integrated business model and broad geographical presence make us well-positioned to meet the growing demand for circular solutions in many industries”, Stein Inge Liasjø ends.

The material’s strength protects your fish and seafood from damages, minimizing waste.

BEWI has ambitious targets for collection – and use of recycled EPS in its product offering. The launch of products based on recycled feedstock brings the company closer to this target, confirming the commitment to leading the change towards a circular economy.
