Espersen shifts seafood production from China to Vietnam
(DENMARK, 9/25/2015)
Danish firm Espersen has decided to move most of its Asian fillet production from China to its newly renovated fish processing plant in Vietnan.
The firm’s executives explained this decision was taken after considering the many challenges being faced in China but recognized it would imply discontinuity in connection with the Chinese New Year in February 2016.
“We have for quite some time known – and publicly expressed – that production in China for the European market would lose its competitive moment within some years,” the firm’s CEO, Klaus Beyer Nielsen, pointed out.
“The increasing inflation in China combined with the heavily increasing US-dollar have been contributory factors in taking the decision to stop production in China proactively and faster than originally planned,” he added.
According to the firm's sources, this decision is supported by the fact that Vietnam and the European Union have made a new trade agreement, which enhances the opportunity to continue to service customers in Europe and North America.
“Furthermore, we are going to increase production in our existing European plants, which means that the majority of the present Chinese production is replaced by production in Vietnam and Europe,” Nielsen added.
Espersen’s sales office in Hong Kong is maintained.
