Sodexo obtains MSC certification for its services to Catholic university
(UNITED STATES, 4/22/2013)
Loyola Marymount University (LMU) has become the first Catholic Jesuit University in the US to advance Sodexo’s commitment across the globe to endorse seafood certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Sodexo provides the university’s 7,000 customers with a dining service.
The MSC’s traceability programme assures LMU’s students that their meals including MSC-certified seafood can be traced throughout the supply chain and back to sustainable fisheries.
This emphasis on certified sustainable seafood via the MSC corresponds with the university’s existing strategic plan to promote global citizenship and ethical sustainability.
“After becoming the first university in California to achieve the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness GREAT Kitchen certification, this further demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Ray Dennis, associate VP of auxiliary management and business services for LMU.
The MSC certification process for the university’s dining service was headed by Wassim Boustani, director of operations for Sodexo at LMU. It entailed an inspection conducted by a third-party auditor and training the frontline staff to make sure that MSC-certified seafood is never mixed with or substituted for non-certified seafood.
Sodexo recently introduced MSC-certified seafood at other client locations in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area, including National Geographic, National Academy of Sciences and National Aquarium. The DC programme is expected to reach more than one million seafood consumers, all the while furthering Sodexo’s efforts to raise awareness about its North American commitment to seafood sustainability.
“Sodexo’s commitment to seafood sustainability is significant and is helping to transform the global seafood market to a more sustainable basis,” said Kerry Coughlin, regional director for MSC Americas. “By obtaining MSC Chain of Custody certification and displaying the MSC eco-label, Sodexo is assuring consumers the seafood they are purchasing is the seafood identified, comes from a MSC certified sustainable fishery and can be traced from their plate to that fishery.”
Every day, Sodexo serves more than 15 million customers throughout North America. The company specifically calls for the sourcing of sustainable fish and seafood as part of its Better Tomorrow Plan and through its partnership with the MSC and Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).
Sodexo is currently working with its suppliers and distribution partners to stop serving seafood that is not certified by one of these bodies.
