Sodexo to serve 100 pc sustainable seafood by 2015
(UNITED STATES, 2/28/2011)
Food service operator Sodexo, Inc has announced a comprehensive and industry leading sustainable seafood initiative to go into effect by 2015. By that time, 100 per cent of its contracted fresh and frozen seafood will be certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).
The Sustainable Seafood Initiative, "Your Better Choice in Seafood," is part of Sodexo's 14 Better Tomorrow Plan commitments to the environment, nutrition, health and wellness and support for local communities.
Sodexo's new global seafood plan, with which "Your Better Choice in Seafood" aligns, is founded on five key points:
1. Maintain a wide variety of species in the company’s catalogues and menus

2. Prohibit at-risk species and apply control measures for others
3. Up the use of eco-standards or labels
4. Establish supply for sustainable fish farming
5. Develop sourcing per an established technical agreement between Sodexo and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
An approaching global seafood policy will offer guidance to take concrete steps toward sustainably source seafood across the world in the 80 countries where the company runs its operations.
"Sodexo touches the lives of over 10 million people daily," said Ann Oka, senior vice president, supply management at Sodexo. "We believe our Sustainable Seafood Initiative is unparalleled and can truly make a positive impact on the health of the world's oceans and fisheries, as well as providing consumers a better choice in seafood."
The firm has joined MSC and the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) to appraise the sustainability of all its wild-caught and farm-raised seafood purchases.
Moreover, Sodexo is joining hands with the following companies and specialists to give its customers the assurance of excellence for environmental responsibility and accountability insofar as seafood sustainability:
- NSF Surefish is North America’s only non-governmental seafood specialist; it provides independent, third-party seafood product inspections and facility auditing services, including the ability to issue MSC Chain of Custody certification and perform audits against BAP standards developed by GAA.
- CleanFish is an industry leader in bringing together eco-friendly fishers and farmers and championing their products in the marketplace under traceable and transparent brands.
- Koch Foods, an industry leader in foodservice sales and marketing, is assisting Sodexo with the execution of its programmes.
"By taking a leadership role in creating a better environment through 100 per cent contracted sustainable seafood sourcing, Sodexo will actively help to accelerate a global shift to sustainable fishing practices," said Kerry Coughlin, regional director, Americas of MSC.
