Farmed Sea Bass and Sea Bream from Corfu Sea Farm Confirmed Sustainable

  (GREECE, 6/27/2018)

Just-concluded third-party audit confirms Greek Corfu Sea Farm S.A. European sea bass and sea bream compliant with Friend of the Sea standard for seafood from sustainable aquaculture.

Founded in 1992, the company has obtained its first Friend of the Sea certification back in 2015. The aquaculture site is located in Kassiopi, in the northern part of the Island of Corfu, where the deep open water and strong currents provide excellent breeding conditions.

Corfu Sea Farm S.A. is certified by the Friend of the Sea for sustainable fish farming guaranteeing a harmonious balance between the environment, the society, the economy and the pressure exercised upon the wild fish population.

According to the latest submitted and approved environmental impacts assessment, no critical alterations of the surrounding ecosystem were found. The sea farm applies an effective Food Safety Management System. In all cages, nets are in place to prevent birds’ entanglement. Both farmed species are indigenous and originate from a verified and authorized hatchery. Fish-feed used is produced according to Greek and European legislation and it does contains neither GMOs nor processed animal proteins.

The sea bream is a coastal and benthic species, mostly found along the Mediterranean coasts, in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean from the British Isles to the Strait of Gibraltar, around the Canary Islands and the Red Sea.

"We at Corfu Sea Farm respect the environment and deeply believe in sustainable development,” explains Sotiris Papadopoulos, Manager at Corfu Sea Farm. “We are particularly fond of the Friend of the Sea certification, as it provides an international third party confirmation of our full engagement to sustainability."

The methods used for harvesting and packing guarantee excellent flesh quality and duration of freshness. The packing of the produce takes place in specially designed installations in compliance with the European Union’s directives.

“During the years, Corfu Sea Farm has upheld its engagements to marine habitat preservation as well as social accountability principles,” comments Paolo Bray, founder and director of Friend of the Sea. “The company is also exploring all possible improvements in fish welfare, in collaboration with Friend of the Sea.”

Sea Bass and Sea Bream are known as fish with high omega-3 (ω-3) fatty acids and a high omega 3 (ω-3) to omega 6 (ω-6) ratio. Such a diet is considered to have positive health effects.

Corfu Sea Farm products are exported to Italy, the USA, Canada and U.K.

About Corfu Sea Farm

“Corfu Sea Farm S.A” was founded in 1992, is one of the leading export companies in Corfu and is a producer of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and Sea Bream (Sparus aurata).

The company's marine installations are located in the northern part of the island, west of Kassiopi, where deep open waters and strong sea currents provide excellent fish farming conditions thus making a decisive contribution to the conservation of the marine environment and the superior quality of the fish.

The perfect packaging of the company's products, a basic prerequisite for the further strengthening of its international positioning, now takes place in a newly built packing house.

This new packing facility meets all the Greek and International specifications and requirements determined by HACCP (Risk Analysis and Critical Control Points) and by the current legislation.
