Pescanova gets rid of its turbot plant in Portugal
(SPAIN, 7/5/2017)
Three Portuguese creditor banks of Acuinova-Mira have sold all the shares of the Portuguese company to Ondas e Versos LDA, who has assumed its management.
Acuinova, which has so far belonged to Grupo Nueva Pescanova, was active in the management of a turbot plant located in the Portuguese town of Mira.
Nueva Pescanova detailed that the banks involved are Millennium BCP, Caixa Geral de Depósitos and NovoBanco, but it did not disclose the amount of the operation.
In addition, through a statement, the group stressed that from the outset "it made every effort to defend the interests of society and its 127 workers, trying to save Mira and keep their activity."
Nueva Pescanova recalled that the turbot plant had filed in January a request for a special process to revitalize companies before the judicial authorities of Portugal, which was finally approved at the beginning of last month by the majority of its creditors (financial institutions, workers of Acuinova and the Portuguese State). The aim was to reach a refinancing agreement with its creditors to reduce the financial burden and redirect the project.
"The transfer of Acuinova-Mira does not have a relevant impact for Grupo Nueva Pescanova," ensured Nueva Pescanova, as it was an asset available for sale and was not included in the consolidated accounts of the group.
Grupo Nueva Pescanova also committed to maintaining “its collaboration spirit and responsibility" to support the continuity of the company's activity and all its jobs.
Mira plant was built in 2007, after the Galician Government paralyzed Pescanova's ambitious investment in Cabo Touriñán, arguing that it was in the Natura Network. The Portuguese Government, on the other hand, considered the project, which demanded an investment of EUR 140 million, as having national interest, and supported its installation.
The aquaculture plant, proclaimed as the largest in Europe, always operated below its production capacity, as a result of accidents caused by construction failures, which between 2009 and 2014 caused more than EUR 70 million of losses to the company.
