BlueWater plans to close operations in Lachine by 2014
(CANADA, 10/25/2013)
As many as 124 employees will lose their jobs in a restructuring move by seafood processor BlueWater Seafoods when the firm closes down its Lachine plant.
The Quebec-based firm’s employees will be out of work as from 1 June, 2014, but the company has stated that it will support its employees and tackle the issue with “fairness and respect”, reports the Canadian Press.
Most of the workers at the company have been employed there for more than twenty years.
In an official statement the company expressed that the restructuring move will be made as part of a “comprehensive strategy to consolidate its manufacturing operations in order to increase efficiency.”
“Everyone was disappointed, but with this advance notice, we hope to help employees to transition to new jobs,” spokesperson for BlueWater Seafoods, Daniel Granger, told Global News.
Granger praised the employees’ skills by pointing out that they were well-trained, familiar with food processing equipment and technology.
BlueWater Seafoods, a subsidiary of Gorton’s, has been operating for over 50 years.
Granger went on to add that, provided that the company’s workers were willing to, they would be relocated to other Gorton’s plants within the United States and will be placed on top of the list when new job opportunities arise.
