Seafood Company shuts down Hull plant

Grimsby-based fish juggernaut The Seafood Company intends to close its Hull filleting factory due to financial instability and move it across the Humber to Grimsby.
"Against a backdrop of fuel price increases, bridge toll charges and the need to undertake capital investment in the factory, the costs of transporting fish between our factories in Grimsby and Hull does not make commercial sense,” explained Managing Director Pete Ward.
It has entered into a 30-day consultation with staff at Midgleys. All 41 employees will have the choice to move to Grimsby, where the operations will take place, and keep working for the company.
If despite the "reasonably high" levels of interest in commuting jobs are left to fill, the firm will seek local workers.
Ward informed that 98 per cent of the fish processed in Hull was transferred to the Marsden Road plant for added value preparations and packaging, reports Grimsby Telegraph.
"In the current economic climate, the chilled fish market has become increasingly price competitive, particularly in whitefish, and we need to be in a position to compete on a level playing field with our competitors,” he said. "By consolidating our operations in Marsden Road we could create a more competitive, efficient, responsive and robust supply chain.”
Ward said the company hugely regrets having to move its operations, calling the workforce at Midgleys “loyal colleagues.”
"If staff are unable to relocate we will do our utmost, together with the relevant agencies, to find them alternative employment," he affirmed.
The Seafood Company is a major supplier to all UK chilled fish retailers. It is part of the Findus Group and a sister company to Young's. The firm has turnover in excess of GBP 375 million (EUR 450.8 million) per year and employs over 2000 workers.
It provides over 1 million seafood meals a day.
