Govt’s GBP 17m investment to boost aquaculture research in Scotland
(UNITED KINGDOM, 6/1/2018)
As part of the City Region Deals, which are designed to drive economic growth, a total of GBP 90.2 million is being invested into Stirling and Clackmannanshire by the Scottish and UK governments, each providing half of the total.
The investment is intended to support a new International Environment Centre and a new Aquaculture Innovation Hub at Stirling University apart from housing and business and the development of tourism and culture.
For the construction of the Aquaculture Innovation Hub the United Kingdom Government will invest GBP 17 million. This centre will be unique in Scotland and the UK, and will operate four aquatic research facilities, providing the full range of marine environmental conditions.
The hub will create research and development opportunities that will secure jobs and an economic contribution in the process.
On the other hand, the Environment Centre will provide an integrated approach to cutting-edge research, innovation, skills development, inclusion and sustainable growth that tackles global environmental challenges.
“Investment in world-class research through the City Deal will enable University of Stirling researchers to further tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems. By working in partnership, we can unleash our economic potential, delivering a unique source of jobs, growth, and skills development, both for Stirling, and the wider Scottish and UK economies," pointed out University Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerry McCormac.
While touring the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre at the university, Scottish Secretary David Mundell highlighted that the ambitious and innovative deal will drive economic growth across the region, creating jobs and boosting prosperity for generations to come.
“It is now for Stirling and Clackmannanshire to get on with the hard work needed to turn these proposals into a reality,” the secretary stated.
"Today's announcement brings the UK government's investment in UK City Region Deals in Scotland to more than GBP 1 billion. All of Scotland's seven cities either have, or are in negotiation for, a deal. And talks are also underway on the Borderlands and Ayrshire growth deals," the secretary stated.
For his part, Scottish Economy Secretary Keith Brown said the Scottish government has been fully committed to this deal throughout, adding that that is why they are prepared to invest at the level they expected to ensure the region delivers its economic potential.
