Pharmaq sets foot in Central America
(PANAMA, 11/11/2013)
In October, Pharmaq set its subsidiaries Pharnaq CA Panama Inc. and Pharmaq Costa Rica SA as part of the global business strategy of the firm. The operations in Central America will be directed from Pharmaq’s new offices in Panama City.
Pharmaq Panama will be the centre of business activities in the region. Earlier this year, Mario Aguirre joined the company as a Regional Manager for Central America and will perform his duties in the company's office in Panama City.
Pharmaq’s objective is to introduce high quality health products and services for the tilapia aquaculture industry as well as for all other species farmed in temperate waters in the region.
Latin America produces 400,000 tonnes of farmed tilapia per year, which is still not enough to meet the domestic demand in some countries such as Mexico, Brazil and Colombia. In addition, a considerable amount of tilapia fillet is exported to the United States.
One of the biggest challenges of the tilapia industry in Latin America is the production losses due to streptococcal disease caused by the bacterium Streptococcus agalactiae. The development of an effective vaccine against this disease is a high priority for Pharmaq so extensive field studies have been conducted in Costa Rica. New product development projects aimed at meeting the needs of the aquaculture industry will be established.
"I am really pleased that Mario is with us to drive the business locally, in close collaboration with our team of Pharmaq in Oslo and in Chile," stated general manager Morten Kr Nordstad.
Mario Aguirre has more than 30 years’ experience in aquaculture business in Latin/Central America. This includes expertise in shrimp and tilapia aquaculture and experience in management, marketing, sales and technical assistance in the health and nutrition of aquatic animals.
Since 2005 he has developed markets for health products for aquatic animals in Central America and other Latin American countries. He studied Marine Biology and obtained a Master degree (MBA) in Venezuela.
