Loblaw makes strides toward 100pc sustainable seafood
(CANADA, 6/27/2012)
Loblaw Companies Limited has made great progress in the past year toward its goal of sourcing 100 per cent of its seafood from sustainable sources by year-end 2013. The company has been involved in industry collaborations and provided customers with more education and sustainable seafood options.
Loblaw has tripled the number of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified wild-caught seafood in its stores from 22 to 73 and is offering WiseSource™ Salmon in more of its banner stores in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Quebec this year.
The company remains the largest seller of MSC-certified products in Canada.
Further, it implementated a vendor questionnaire in Spring 2012 which has improved the management of its seafood buying process.

"For the balance of the year, Loblaw remains focused on increasing engagement with consumers, suppliers and key industry stakeholders," said Paul Uys, VP of sustainable seafood. "While we still have work ahead of us, we are confident that we have paved the road for success."
Loblaw’s progress has drawn the praise of environmental groups such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
"Loblaw has developed the most aggressive sustainable seafood commitment in the world," says Gerald Butts, president and CEO, WWF Canada. "Through its collaboration within the supply chain, investment in education, and stakeholder and government engagement, Loblaw is driving large-scale transformational change."

For its industry collaboration efforts, the firm has also taken the following measures:
- Engaged partners and vendors to source viable solutions for closed containment aquaculture;
- Engaged national brand vendors to implement MSC certification for their seafood products;
- Participated in the global Salmon Aquaculture Dialogues (SAD);
- Become members of the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation (IFFO) and begin conversion to 100 per cent feed, with fishmeal and fish oil, certified against the IFFO Responsible Supply standard for all its control brand aquaculture programmes;
- Continue to work toward appropriate solutions to managing species at risk in partnership with the fishing industry, WWF and its independent marine science advisor.
To educate and engage consumers about sustainable seafood, Loblaw has launched a website, raised awareness via its Facebook page and offers various in-store marketing materials.
The company’s 2012 targets also include offering customers more responsible seafood options and working with partners and suppliers to drive progress in new and meaningful ways by completing vendor questionnaire analysis to identify remaining high-risk species/stocks and vendors unable or unwilling to meet Loblaw's criteria for sustainability. Moreover, where there is an MSC-certified fishery in place, Loblaw intends to convert, or have an action plan in place to convert, all outstanding control brand products to MSC sources.
