'The Story of the Golden Fish' - a warning about destructive fishing practices
(POLAND, 5/18/2011)
Polish members of the OCEAN2012 coalition are gearing up for a street performance “The story of the Golden Fish”, which will take place on May 20 during European Maritime Day in Gdansk, Poland.
The performance by Klub Gaja aims to increase awareness of overfishing and its negative consequences on the Baltic Sea fish species and their ecosystems.
“The Story of the Golden Fish” captures the absurdity of the present EU fishery management and currently destructive fishing practices; aspects, which have depleted fish resources and disturbed marine ecosystems.
OCEAN2012 hopes that European Maritime Day will highlight the most pressing issues plaguing European fisheries today, in order to ensure a radical reform of the European fishery management.
The European Commission will shortly publish their proposal for a reformed Common Fishery Policy (CFP). Therefore, 2012 presents a crucial opportunity to transform the way European fisheries are managed in order to stop overfishing, end destructive fishing practices, and deliver fair and equitable use of abundant fish stocks.
With the Polish Presidency of the EU Council approaching, Gdansk, Poland was chosen to host the 2011 European Maritime Day, which in fact lasts several days (May 19-22).
Some of the keynote speakers include the European Commission Vice President, Siim Kallas and Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki. Polish Prime minister Donald Tusk will be one of the speakers opening the event on 19 May.
