Galicia pitches experimental octopus plan
(SPAIN, 1/7/2010)
The Council of Marine Affairs of Galicia, through the General Directorate of Marine Resource Ordinance and Management, approved the decision to launch an experimental plan involving angler’s baskets for octopus capture.
Beginning the first day of the year, a regulation has gone into effect that allows vessels to carry a fixed number of baskets per gross register tonnage (GRT).
The norm puts forth that those vessels that have less than 2.5 tonnes of GRT will be able to carry up to 75 baskets on board, in addition to another 50 per each enlisted crewmember, not to exceed 175 units.
For vessels that oscillate between 2.5 and 5 tonnes of GRT, the number of baskets allowed for octopus capture is 150 units, as well as 50 more per sailor, not to exceed 300 units.
If the ship surpasses 5 tonnes of GRT, it will be able to employ 250 devices and 50 additional ones per each professional, although it cannot exceed a maximum of 500 baskets.
Meanwhile, the new annual plan for octopus capture for the current fiscal year was published in the Diario Oficial de Galicia, effectively replacing the one in effect during the 2006-09 period.
In a first stage, a limit of 50 kg of cephalopods per vessel was fixed, with another 50 per crewmember, up to a maximum of 300 kg daily, through 30 April.
In a second stage, which runs from May to late October, the catch limit is reduced to 30 kg per vessel, with another 30 kg per enlisted sailor, up to a maximum of 180 kg daily.
On this opportunity, the weekly quotas, which had generated so much controversy among professionals using lesser gear, were removed.
In terms of the volume of mollusc captures, an improvement in the coastal platform zone of Barbanza-Fisterra was achieved in the last few weeks following several months of miniscule landings, La Voz de Galicia reports.
The Barbanza sailors are managing to obtain the pre-set limits without any problem, regional authorities acknowledge. The unloaded units have an average weight of 2-4 kg, and their prices have undergone a significant hike over the last few weeks.
