Wild-caught skipjack tuna.

All Natural Sustainable Canned Seafood

  (CANADA, 11/27/2019)

Raincoast Trading is a company well known for leading the way in sustainable seafood.  Raincoast Trading only sources from fisheries with sustainable stocks and from fishers who adhere to responsible fishing methods (such as pole-and-line tuna fishing). The company ensures that all of its fish can be tracked from boat to can and that this information can be made available to consumers.

Because of this, Raincoast Trading is the first Canadian packaged retail seafood company endorsed by the respected Ocean Wise™ conservation program as an environmentally-friendly seafood choice for retail grocers and consumers around the world.

Fished by local Maldives fishers with pole and line.

For its Raincoast Global product line, Raincoast Trading works closely with the Marine Stewardship Council, sourcing sustainable pole and line-caught wild skipjack tuna from the Maldives.

Raincoast Global Wild Skipjack canned Tuna is available in two varieties: with natural sea salt and salt-free. Both contain low levels of mercury with no added flavouring or preservatives and no bleaching. The company has also added to its Raincoast Global product line flavoured pouches with three distinctive flavours: sandwich ready Wild Skipjack Tuna with mayonnaise & chives; Mediterranean Wild Skipjack Tuna, rich flavours of sundried tomatoes, olive oil and basil and, Thai Chili Wild Skipjack Tuna, a sweet and flavourful start with a fiery finish, all MSC certified. Raincoast Global Wild Skipjack is 100% traceable from boat to package.

Raincoast Wild Skipjack Tuna comes from an MSC certified fishery.

Sardines (sardinops sagax species), are plentiful and caught with purse seine nets, which have an extremely low impact on ocean habitat and result in little to no by-catch primarily because Pacific Coast fishermen target a specific school of fish that usually consists of one species. Because these fish are found in tight schools, capturing them requires little chasing around, dragging of nets, or setting of lines, so their carbon footprint is low. Pacific Sardines are OceanWise recommended and the Monterey Bay Aquarium has ranked sardines in the top five in its Super Green List.

Raincoast Trading’s Pacific Sardines are available in five varieties: Natural Spring Water, Tomato Sauce, Cumin & Coriander, Dill & Parsley, Chili & Lime.

Available in five tasty flavors, sardines are making a come back with health-conscious, green consumers.

As part of its ongoing commitment to quality and sustainability, Raincoast Traiding has designed a system to track the fish from can back to boat. Production codes on the bottom of Raincoast cans give an expiry date and can be used to trace the origin of the fish. With this code, the company can identify the vessel, captain, name, vessel flag, harvest method, area of capture, and trip dates.

This information is critical in substantiating a sustainability claim. The company gives this information to ocean conservation groups as part of their auditing systems. This provides them the tools they need to declare Raincoast Trading a great sustainable seafood choice.

Raincoast trading was founded in 1995 by a fishing family who wanted to see their high quality local products preserved in a way that would be accessible to more people.

About Raincoast Trading

Raincoast Trading has been selling premium wild seafood products since 1995. Based in Vancouver on the west coast of Canada, the company is proud to offer consumers sustainably-harvested, gourmet canned seafood.

Raincoast Trading adheres to the highest sustainability standards when catching, processing and packaging its seafood. Pole & line fishing involves individual lines with bait or lures attached at the end of the line. Any by-catch caught by pole & line can easily be released alive and there is no impact on the surrounding environment.

All of Raincoast salmon is wild and caught in Canadian and US waters as part of a sustainably managed Pacific Northwest fishery.
