Kelp Flake and Kelp Powder are packaged in stay-fresh packages with resealable tops.

Atlantic Sea Farms Launches Dried Organic Kelp Flake and Dried Organic Kelp Powder

  (UNITED STATES, 1/26/2024)

Furthering its mission to diversify coastal economies and improve ocean health through regenerative kelp farming, Atlantic Sea Farms—the American leader in seaweed aquaculture—has launched two pantry products for home cooks, Dried Organic Kelp Flake and Dried Organic Kelp Powder.

Available on Amazon, these newest in the company’s lineup of popular kelp products comprise regeneratively grown small batch kelp in two grain sizes: A delicately crunchy flake and a fine powder. They are the first non-perishable direct-to-consumer pantry products from Atlantic Sea Farms whose award-winning refrigerated jarred ferments and frozen products have gained a following among preeminent chefs and discerning consumers alike.

These new products are grown and hand-harvested by family farmers in the clean, cold waters of the Gulf of Maine.

Atlantic Sea Farms partners with fishermen to grow regeneratively farmed seaweed as an adaptation strategy and to help mitigate some of the effects of climate change, while providing consumers with one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. Its Kelp Flake and Kelp Powder are certified organic and NON GMO, gluten-free, and vegan.

Delicious as salt replacements and all-purpose seasonings, they also offer near-endless exciting culinary uses: Kelp Flake, great for sprinkling  (like flaky sea salt)  adds light umami notes and a delicate saline crunch to everything from avocado toast and popcorn to egg dishes, smoked salmon and bagel spreads, roasted whole cauliflower, salads, rice and noodle dishes, roast vegetables, finished meats and fish, and more. Its finely ground counterpart, Kelp Powder, blends seamlessly into smoothies, stocks and soups, makes a great rub for meats, adds flavor to marinades, dressings, and dips, and easily folds into bread, pasta, and even cookie doughs.

This nutrient dense, climate-hero seaweed is rope-grown and hand harvested by family sea-farmers in New England.

In addition to impactful benefits for the planet and coastal communities, kelp is among the most nutrient-dense foods available. It includes naturally high levels of iodine, which is essential to thyroid health, as well as antioxidants, potassium, iron and folic acid, and it boasts the highest natural concentration of calcium of any food. It also contains soluble fiber, which supports regulated blood sugar levels and heart health, as well as prebiotic fiber and the amino acid glutamine, which are important for gut health.

Carbon negative and creating important benefits for the ocean, Atlantic Sea Farms’ domestically cultivated kelp is a regenerative, zero-input aquaculture crop that requires no fertilizer, pesticides, feeds, arable land, or fresh water.

“Kelp Flake and Kelp Powder are so versatile, delicious and simple to use, they make it  extremely easy for consumers to incorporate climate hero kelp into everyday meals,” Atlantic Sea Farms CEO Briana Warner says. “We are working to prove that good food can do good by helping fishermen diversify their incomes in the face of climate change while providing nutrient dense foods that are good for people and the planet, and that help reestablish hope for a more resilient future on the water.”

Atlantic Sea Farms CEO Briana Warner.

Since 2018, Atlantic Sea Farms has removed upwards of 300,000 pounds of carbon and 70,000 pounds of nitrogen from local Maine waters while supporting fishing communities. “Every time people eat our kelp products, they are positively impacting the planet and contributing to our mission to get more fishermen farming kelp as a way to diversify incomes and create resilience in the face of climate change” Warner says.

Kelp Flake and Kelp Powder are packaged in stay-fresh packages with resealable tops and sold in 1 ounce sizes, which yield at least 28 servings. The new pantry products join Atlantic Sea Farms’ existing suite of award-winning fresh-frozen and fermented kelp products, which have been granted coveted awards by the Good Food Foundation, Specialty Food Association, New Hope Network, and many more.

Kelp offers near-endless exciting culinary uses.
