NOS Clearing ASA (NOS), owned by NASDAQ OMX Group, has announced the launch of the NASDAQ Salmon Index.

Since May 2008 NOS has been responsible for the collection, analysis and distribution of the "NOS-price," which is a salmon price based on independent exporters' purchase prices from Norwegian salmon farmers.

Since spring 2012, NOS and Fish Pool have worked closely together with key players in the salmon industry to establish a new and improved salmon spot price. The new spot price is based on exporters' salmon sales prices transported by truck. It will be an effective price benchmark for buyers and sellers backed by a large part of the total production.

Historical data will continue to be available for analysis purposes on the NOS website. The NASDAQ Salmon Index can be viewed in several currencies.

The NASDAQ Salmon Index (NQSALMON) is the weighted average of weekly reported sales prices and corresponding volumes in fresh Atlantic Superior Salmon, head on gutted (HOG), reported to NOS Clearing ASA by a panel of Norwegian salmon exporters and salmon producers with export license. The panel is representative for the total export out of Norway.

The data behind NASDAQ Salmon Index accounts for 50 per cent of the Fish Pool Index (FPI). The NASDAQ Salmon Index 3-6kg, using a standard weight distribution of 30 per cent 3-4kg, 40 per cent 4-5kg and 30 per cent 5-6kg, adjusted with a correction factor of -0.75 NOK is used in the FPI.

Explanations:

- NQSALMON for week 14 was NOK 40.21/kg average price all sizes. This is a volume weighted calculation.
 Same way as the NOS price was calculated  (price SUP1-2 of 32.35  * 0.42 per cent + price SUP2-3 of 35.82 *  7.24 per cent ….  + price SUP9+ of 41.79 *  0.20 per cent);

- Week change:  Price in week 14 was NOK 2.10  higher than in week 13, and NOK 1.26 higher than in week 10  (4 week change) and NOK 7.18  higher than week 2  (12 week change);

- Distribution:  This is the per cent of reported volume  (not slaughtered volume).  Remember that only export to Europe is included.  Volume sold by air-freight, etc. is not included;

- t.dev.  Standard deviation is a mathematical formula of the variation in the prices reported.  A low st. dev means that the exporters reported quite equal prices.

NASDAQ Salmon Index 3-6 kg weighted 30/40/30

The report also includes a calculation of the NASDAQ price for the standard industrial sizes SUP3-6 kg used in the calculation of Fish Pool Index,  settlement price of all financial contracts.

·For week 14 the NASDAQ Salmon Index 3-6 kg weighted 30/40/30 was NOK 40.38/kg calculated as follows:

  • 30 per cent price SUP3-4 of NOK 39.70/kg;
  • 40 per cent price SUP4-5 of NOK 40.53/kg;
  • 30 per cent price SUP5-6 of NOK 40.85 /kg.

This is an exporters selling price. NOK 0.75/kg is deducted from the NASDAQ price in the calculation of the Fish Pool Index. NOK 39.63/kg is thus the input in the calculation of the Fish Pool Index. The Fish Pool Index settlement price will stay unchanged.  All Financial Fish Pool contracts will be settled at FPI with FCA Oslo as point of reference.
