One-third of the fish sold today are raised in tanks and cages. This “aquaculture” is one of the fastest-growing sectors of animal food production, and like inhumanely raised chickens, farmed fish harm the environment and our health.
Farm-raised salmon eat an unnatural diet of fish oil from limited species, soy beans, canola oil and red dye. This produces flabby, bright pink meat with less omega-3 fats (associated with decreasing inflammation), more omega-6 fats (associated with inflammation) and elevated levels of mercury. Wild salmon get lots of exercise and enjoy a varied diet including shrimp and krill, which gives salmon its famous pinkish color.

Salmon farming has become a major industry in the last few decades, and the volume of farmed salmon has increased tremendously.
Unfortunately, the same can be said of the presence of the salmon louse, the most important sea lice species and one of the main disease problems in the industry. This problem has increased greatly in recent years.
The main task of the Sea Lice Research Centre in Bergen, Norway is to gain more knowledge about the salmon louse, which in turn will lead to better tools to control the lice problem.
Knowing that this will take a concerted national effort, researchers and representatives from Norway’s aquaculture industry and public administration gathered in Oslo recently to discuss how to make use of the enormous volume of data generated by the genomic sequencing projects. Issues they discussed included how to prioritise projects based on their importance for Norway’s aquaculture industry – and how to secure funding for the projects selected.
Industry expects results: Sequencing of the cod’s genetic material was completed in 2010, and the salmon’s will be finalised by early 2012.
HQ Sustainable Maritime Industries, Seattle’s entry in the parade of U.S.-listed Chinese companies accused of accounting fraud, has reached a proposed settlement with shareholders.
But don’t expect any big celebrations. The abused investors stand to collect about 32 cents per share for their stock, which traded close to USD 10 in mid-2009.
The company claimed to be doing a thriving business selling pond-raised tilapia from China. But in spring 2011 HQ’s most prominent director and auditing firm both resigned, citing questions about the company’s finances and lack of management cooperation in getting answers.

PETALING JAYA - A move by the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) to withdraw without notice its commercial subsidiary's right to collect fishery import charges contributed to the venture sustaining acute losses over the past five years.
In asserting this, the Auditor-General's office said in its 2011 report that the annual losses of the subsidiary, Majuikan Sdn Bhd, rose from MYR 1.21 million in 2007 to MYR 17.38 million in 2010.
OSAGE BEACH, (MO) - Missourians may be familiar with the paddlefish (it is their state’s official aquatic animal, after all), but not many know that the bizarre-looking creature was behind Missouri’s once thriving caviar industry.
Caviar producers in Missouri once exported thousands of pounds of the delicacy, largely to buyers in Japan, China, the European Union and other countries. In recent years, though, production has been dwindling, and it may be on the brink of disappearing altogether, doling an economic hit to the state.
