Security has been increased at a hatchery in Northwest Michigan after the deaths of about 5,700 coho salmon being blamed on vandalism, state officials said Monday 15 Oct.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is seeking tips from the public in finding out who is behind the vandalism at Platte River State Fish Hatchery in Beulah, about 25 miles southwest of Traverse City. Coho are released in the Platte River near the hatchery, and stocking sustains the fish population.
The Harper Government is helping convert a former mushroom plant in Thames Centre to a state-of-the-art fish farm. The project was announced 16 Oct. by Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London, Joe Preston, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Keith Ashfield and Minister of State for Science and Technology Gary Goodyear.
“By investing in projects like this, our Government is helping build a brighter future for rural communities in southern Ontario,” Preston said. “This project will boost our economy by creating local jobs and enhancing our domestic fish farming industry.”
Fishing industry plays a pivotal role in the national economy. Pakistan is blessed with rich fishery potential with a coastline of about 1,120 km. Fishery provides employment to about 300,000 fishermen directly. Further, another 400,000 people are employed in associated industries. The fisheries sector provides jobs for about 1 percent of the country's labour force. It adds only 0.3 per cent to overall gross Domestic Product (GDP), 1.3 per cent to agricultural GDP and less than 1 per cent to country's employment.
According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, in terms of quantity, the country's seafood export fell by 7 per cent or 9,437 tons to 124,489 tons during fiscal year 2012 as compared to export of 133,926 tons in fiscal year 2011.
AUCKLAND - Sanford Limited has become the first New Zealand company to join the World Ocean Council (WOC), a global alliance of leadership companies working for sustainable development and conservation of the world’s oceans, significantly expanding fishing industry involvement in the WOC.
Sanford Managing Director, Eric Barratt said the WOC is an unprecedented global industry alliance focused on corporate ocean responsibility. “The fishing industry has a vital role to play in achieving WOC’s ultimate goal of ‘a healthy and productive global ocean and its sustainable use, development and stewardship by a responsible ocean business community’.”
Nigerian pirates have attacked a cargo vessel, kidnapping six Russians and one Estonian. Another nine crew members were left on Liberty 249, which has safely docked at the Nigerian port of Onne, its final destination.
The attack occurred on Monday 15 Oct. near the Niger Delta, but it only became known on Wednesday 17 Oct.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Russian nationals were among the seized crewmembers. Russian and Estonian diplomats assured they are now taking all the necessary measures to hasten the release and secure the safety of the kidnapped sailors. Nigeria Special Forces are working in cooperation with both Russia and Estonia to find the crewmembers, as their whereabouts are unknown.
HCM CITY - Seafood companies that import raw materials for processing exports have asked the Government to extend their 275-day grace period for paying import duties.
The grace period is allowed under the Import and Export Tax Law for companies that import raw materials and accessories for production of goods for export.
The Ministry of Finance, however, has recently compiled a draft on the revised Tax Management Law that requires companies to pay tax before customs clearance, or provide a guarantee from a credit institution before they can secure the 275-day grace period.
ELLSWORTH - Maine lobstermen are running out of time to preserve their right to set their gear in federal waters beyond the three-mile limit.
In June, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) approved a final rule establishing a limited entry program for the lobster fishery in the federal waters of the Gulf of Maine out to about 50 miles offshore known as Lobster Conservation Area 1. Fishermen who now hold federal permits to fish for lobster in Area 1 have until Thursday, 1 Nov., to submit an application to renew their federal lobster licenses. Fishermen who don’t file on time won’t be allowed to fish in federal waters after 30 April of next year.
Nonetheless, BFAR National Director Asis Perez said the bureau will still consult with fishermen and commercial fishing fleets regarding the matter, which was a logical consequence of the apparent success of the sardine fishing ban imposed in the waters of the Zamboanga Peninsula last year.
He said the imposition of a fishing ban in the Visayan Sea is based on Fisheries Administrative Order No. 167 issued in 1989.
WISCASSET,(ME) - Coastal Enterprises Inc. announced it will launch a two-year feasibility study to identify the best ways to make Maine seafood more widely available to consumers.
The study will be done in partnership with Connecticut-based Wholesome Wave, a national nonprofit dedicated to linking local food producers to underserved communities. The two organizations met in Portland last week to discuss the venture, according to a media release.
CEI’s Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Program has been working with Wholesome Wave for the past year in an effort to deploy USD 3 million from the U.S. Treasury’s Healthy Food Finance Initiative into local “food hubs.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines a “food hub” as a “centrally located facility with a business management structure facilitating the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution, and/or marketing of locally/regionally produced food products.”
Tidal conditions off the Southeastern North Carolina coastline Monday 15 Oct. were less than ideal for oystering, but that wasn’t enough to stop commercial fishermen from mucking through the oyster beds on the opening day of the 2012 harvest season.
“The tides aren’t that great this year, so there might not be as many people out as last year,” said Chip Collier, manager of the state Division of Marine Fisheries’ Wilmington district. “It’s heavily tide-dependent on when these guys go, but I’m sure they’re out there trying to scrape together five bushels no matter what.”
