Bell Aquaculture, the nation's largest yellow perch (Perca flavescens) farm and pioneer in sustainable fish farming operations, is exhibiting its new OMRI-Listed 'Fish Rich Organic 2-2-2 Fertilizer' at the 2012 Garden Writers Association (GWA) Annual Symposium 12-15 October in Tucson, Booth #302. The announcement is made by Norman McCowan, president of Bell Aquaculture, who says, "Fish have been used as soil fertilizer since the Native Americans first began farming our nearby land centuries ago. Our organic plant fertilizer, currently marketed as Fish Rich, is made from the remains of the Bell Perch processed at our aquaculture facility in Indiana."
Fish Rich has already been tested by a number of gardening writers and bloggers since launching at the National Hardware Show in May. According to McCowan, the GWA Symposium will give even more writers and bloggers the opportunity to become acquainted firsthand with Bell Aquaculture's new fish-based organic fertilizer.
What could happen if politicians vote for a strong EU fisheries reform with proper implementation that will allow fish stocks to recover? and what if they don't?
A new independent study - Socio-Economic Benefits of a Bold EU Fisheries Reform - will launch next Tuesday 16 October.
The research carried out by Framian BV and commissioned by WWF, is the first to examine the potential social and economic benefits of the fisheries sector from a purely EU perspective, providing strong arguments for an ambitious reform of Europe’s fisheries, which is presently up for review.
Key government researchers have answered calls to ban trawling, saying Australia is home to one of the best managed fisheries in the world.
Questions raised around the sustainability and use of trawling in the wake of the recent super trawler debacle have today been answered by fishery scientists, who say research, efficient management and enforcement has ensured the long-term sustainability of Australian fisheries.
Fisheries Research and Development Corporation Executive Director Dr Patrick Hone says the term trawling encompasses a quite varied range of fishing activities
LEHIGH VALLEY, (PA) - Air Products announced on 11 October that Indura, its South American joint venture, has opened a new 84-ton-per-day industrial gas plant producing liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon in Puerto Varas , Chile . The new facility, which will include a cylinder filling system, will serve local industry including the burgeoning aquaculture market.
The new plant's location in Puerto Varas , which is more than 1,000 miles south of Santiago , makes it the world's southernmost industrial gas plant serving the merchant market. Besides aquaculture, the facility will also supply the metalworking, health and food industries.
"We are proud of the opening of this new facility as we continue to build our business in this exciting growth region," said Mike Olivares, vice president and general manager of Merchant Gases, Latin America for Air Products.
On 12 Oct., Nutreco announced that it has reached an agreement on the sale of Trouw Nutrition Környe Kft's business to Nuscience Group, the premix and specialty division of the Dutch cooperative Royal Agrifirm Group. Környe operates in the premix, concentrates and young animal feed market for pigs and ruminants in Hungary. Following a strategic review it was determined that Környe did not have the scale to meet Nutreco's ambition to become the leading player in the Hungarian market. It is expected that completion of the transaction will take place by the end of this year upon Agrifirm gaining regulatory approval of the Hungarian competition authority.
In 2011 Környe had a turnover of EUR 20 million with a feed production volume of approximately 55,000 tonnes with 67 employees. The combined sales of Nuscience and Agrifirm in Hungary in 2011 were EUR 65 million, with a volume of 225,000 tonnes and a staff of 185 employees.
As part of its work in ensuring compliance with fisheries legislation, the MMO contracts the Royal Navy to carry out inspections of fishing vessels while at sea, with nets routinely examined as part of this. Similar inspections are conducted in ports by MMO marine officers. The new scheme, which is open to any UK-registered vessel fishing in English waters or landing into English ports, will provide assurances for marine enforcement officers, and vessel owners, that the nets are the correct mesh size range declared in the logbook.

WEST OCEAN CITY - Waterman’s Seafood Company remains closed indefinitely in the aftermath of a two-alarm fire that damaged much of the second-story kitchen and dining area.
General manager Rod Parsons said the cause of the 5 Oct. fire appears to be an electrical problem that started in the kitchen, though that’s not been confirmed by the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office, which was closed Monday 8 Oct.
Parsons said he hopes the 30-year-old restaurant and crab house will re-open in the spring, though he can’t say for sure. More information will come, he said, pending the results of an insurance adjustor’s 8 Oct. visit.
