FREETOWN - Living in a country with a 70 per cent youth unemployment rate, fishing along the long Atlantic Coast is one of the few options left for Sierra Leonian youth in terms of work. But pirate fishers and an uninterested government are threatening their livelihood.
Albert Johnson helps unload a net full of shimmering silver herring from his fishing boat, a 25-foot wooden canoe painted bright red, bobbing on the water in front of the rocky beach. He untangles the small fish from the net while market sellers crowd the shore, waiting to purchase the catch. "I've been working as a fisherman for a few years now. For us, it is the only means of livelihood," says Johnson, who lives in the fishing community of Goderich, a suburb of Sierra Leone's capital city, Freetown.
The Environment Court has ordered a marine farming company in liquidation to pay NZD 13,650 in costs to Marlborough Sounds resident Cliff Marchant and Friends of Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay.

The claim was made after the Environment Court overturned a decision by the council to renew the consent for two mussel farms at Port Gore in the outer Sounds and confirmed its decision to decline a third, in April.

The BAP standard is audited and certified by independent, third-party certification bodies in an effort to promote responsible practices throughout the aquaculture industry, specifically in the production processes. BAP is a certification system that combines site inspections and effluent sampling with sanitary controls, therapeutant controls and traceability controls. BAP is a set of standards developed by GAA that gives seafood retailers, food service companies, and the end consumers’ confidence that the seafood they sell, purchase and eat comes from a socially, economically and environmentally responsible producer.
