IN BRIEF - Pirates and poaching threatens Sierra Leone's small-scale fishermen

SIERRA LEONE
Friday, October 26, 2012

FREETOWN - Living in a country with a 70 per cent youth unemployment rate, fishing along the long Atlantic Coast is one of the few options left for Sierra Leonian youth in terms of work. But pirate fishers and an uninterested government are threatening their livelihood.

Albert Johnson helps unload a net full of shimmering silver herring from his fishing boat, a 25-foot wooden canoe painted bright red, bobbing on the water in front of the rocky beach. He untangles the small fish from the net while market sellers crowd the shore, waiting to purchase the catch. "I've been working as a fisherman for a few years now. For us, it is the only means of livelihood," says Johnson, who lives in the fishing community of Goderich, a suburb of Sierra Leone's capital city, Freetown.

IN BRIEF - Mussel farm firm to pay NZD 13,650 costs

NEW ZEALAND
Friday, October 26, 2012

The Environment Court has ordered a marine farming company in liquidation to pay NZD 13,650 in costs to Marlborough Sounds resident Cliff Marchant and Friends of Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay.

Judge Jon Jackson said in his written decision he accepted the claim for costs against Port Gore Marine Farms, but not the Marlborough District council.

The claim was made after the Environment Court overturned a decision by the council to renew the consent for two mussel farms at Port Gore in the outer Sounds and confirmed its decision to decline a third, in April.

IN BRIEF - Cooke Aquaculture earns Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification in Chile

CANADA
Thursday, October 25, 2012

BLACKS HARBOUR, NB, CANADA – Cooke Aquaculture Inc.’s subsidiary, Salmones Cupquelan, has earned Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification for its salmon farms in Chile, which produce salmon under the Heritage Salmon brand.

The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) BAP certification is an assurance to consumers that the seafood they are eating comes from a responsible producer who takes care to protect the marine environment.

This application is consistent with Cooke Aquaculture’s long-term commitment to producing healthy seafood while also growing healthy communities and ensuring the marine environment is preserved for generations to come. The marine resources in which Cooke Aquaculture operates are vital to the company’s success now and in the future.

The BAP standard is audited and certified by independent, third-party certification bodies in an effort to promote responsible practices throughout the aquaculture industry, specifically in the production processes. BAP is a certification system that combines site inspections and effluent sampling with sanitary controls, therapeutant controls and traceability controls. BAP is a set of standards developed by GAA that gives seafood retailers, food service companies, and the end consumers’ confidence that the seafood they sell, purchase and eat comes from a socially, economically and environmentally responsible producer.

UNITED STATES
Wednesday, October 24, 2012

ANCHORAGE - State researchers looking for answers to Alaska’s diminishing king salmon returns were urged Tuesday to take a look at the critical days after smolt leave fresh water and to closely examine how humans may affect salmon in marine waters.

“The two leading hypotheses for things that might cause declines of chinook salmon in the ocean are climate change and fishing,” said retired University of Washington fisheries biologist Kate Myers.
