This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and European Union waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1.1 Japan

Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus)

Prices

The average price of Japanese imports of frozen bigeye in December was JPY 782/kg, similar to that of the previous month and up 3% on that of December 2013. During the year, it averaged JPY 730/kg, up 14% on those of 2013.

Markets

In the month analysed, imports of frozen bigeye reached 7,552 tonnes, worth JPY 5,909 million, up 71% in volume and value on those of the previous month and they were up 37% in volume and 41% in value on those of December 2013.

During the year, imports totalled 73,910 tonnes worth JPY 53,960 million, up 2% in volume and up 16% in value on those of the same period in 2013.                                 

Taiwan contributed 50% (36,891 tonnes) and the Chinese Republic sent 19% (14,353 tonnes) of imports of the period.

2. EUROPE

2.1 European Union

Landed volumes

Spain

Incoming volumes on Mercamadrid declined in the case of frozen shortfin mako, frozen and fresh swordfish, during week 7. Those of frozen and fresh albacore increased and so did those of fresh shortfin mako and fresh blue shark.

Italy

At Italian ports, during week 7, volumes of tunid and squaliform species were very few.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on the market of Bangkok declined and stayed between USD 1,200/t and USD 1,300/t. Indonesian exports moved between EUR 1,200/t in the case of sizes below 1.8 kg/pc and EUR 1,330/t in 1.8-3.0 kg/pc.

Spain

In Spain, the price of skipjack also dropped to EUR 950/t EXW Spain and that of yellowfin was at EUR 2,000/t EXW Spain.

On Mercamadrid, the prices of fresh albacore and fresh swordfish increased during week 7. No variations have been registered for the rest of tunid and squaliform species.

Italy

On Italian first-sale markets, prices have barely changed in the case of picked dogfish. The rest of tunid and squalliform products reported no sales.
