This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and Spanish waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1.1 Japan

Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus and Thunnus orientalis)
Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii)

Prices

The average price at Japan Customs of frozen bluefin (HS 030345000 and 030346000) was JPY 1,529/kg in December 2013, similar to that of November and down 12% on that of December 2013. In the year the average was USD 1,588/kg, up 1% on that of the same period in 2013.

Markets

In the month analysed, imports reached 1,079 tonnes of frozen bluefin, worth JPY 1,650 million at Japanese Customs, up 230% in volume and 231% in value on those of the previous month and 177% and 144% respectively on those of December 2013.

During the year, imports reached 14,092 tonnes, worth JPY 22,375 million, up 38% in volume and 39% in value on those of the previous year.

Australia was the main origin of Japanese imports of frozen southern bluefin, with 8,206 tonnes. Australia was the main origin of Japanese imports of frozen southern bluefin, with 8,206 tonnes.

2. EUROPE

2.1 Spain

Landed volumes

Spain

Incoming volumes increased in the case of fresh albacore and fresh swordfish on Mercamadrid during week 6. Those of frozen albacore, frozen and fresh shortfin mako, frozen blue shark and frozen swordfish declined.

At Italian ports, during week 6, volumes of tunid and squaliform species reported very low volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on Bangkok remained at USD 1,510/t.

Prices of yellowfin remained stable in all markets. En el mercado de Manta se ha situado en los EUR 1.700/tm. In the Indian Ocean it was at USD 2,000/t and on Abidjan it remained at EUR 2,030/t.

Offers of double cleansing precooked yellowfin loins from China were at between USD 5,000/t and USD 6,000/t.

Spain

In Spain prices of skipjack stayed at EUR 1,440/t CFR Spain and those of yellowfin at EUR 2,600/t CFR Spain.

On Mercamadrid, during week 6, prices remained stable in all tunid and squaliform presentatinos, except for fresh swordfish that registered a rise.

Italy

At Italian first-sale markets prices have barely changed in the case of picked dogfish. The rest of tunid and squalliform products reported no sales.
