The Ministry of Production (Produce) established, through ministerial resolution No. 000186-2023-PRODUCE, the catch quota for the giant squid resource at four hundred and twenty thousand (420,000) tons for the period of 2023, with the objective of guaranteeing a sustainable use of the species.

According to the ministerial resolution, this catch quota may be modified based on the evolution of biological-fishing, environmental factors and the availability of the resource, following a report from the Instituto del Mar del Perú - IMARPE.
The measure specifies that Produce concludes the extractive activities of the giant squid or squid resource, when the catch quota is reached, when IMARPE recommends it or, failing that, the extractive activities will end on December 31, 2023.
The device indicates that Imarpe must inform Produce about the monitoring of the indicators of the state of exploitation and catch projections of the giant squid.
Likewise, that the General Directorate of Supervision, Inspection and Sanction of the Vice-Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture must adopt the necessary measures to ensure compliance with the fishing management provisions on the resource.
It also indicates that natural and legal persons who contravene the provisions contained in the aforementioned resolution will be penalized in accordance with the General Fisheries Law and other legal provisions in force.
Likewise, and through another ministerial resolution No. 000185-2023-PRODUCE, the Instituto del Mar del Perú - IMARPE was authorized to carry out exploratory fishing for the red sea urchin resource in the maritime area.
Both resolutions bear the signature of the Minister of Production, Raúl Pérez Reyes.
