Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has finalized the PERTE Mar-Industria call, granting €40 million to 19 projects. ANFACO-CECOPESCA hails the initiative, emphasizing the sector's leadership in transformative sustainability and digitalization investments, though it notes that budget limitations excluded other quality projects.

MADRID – The Spanish sea-industry sector has received a significant boost with the definitive resolution of the PERTE Mar-Industria call for proposals. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has allocated the full €40 million originally earmarked, which will be distributed among 19 high-impact business projects.

This capital injection is set to mobilize close to €100 million in investment, with the aim of bolstering the competitiveness, sustainability, and digitalization of a key sector for the Spanish economy, in addition to fostering job creation.

The National Association of Manufacturers of Canned and Processed Fish and Seafood Products (ANFACO-CECOPESCA) played a crucial role in advocating for this instrument. Of the 19 beneficiary projects, 17 belong to companies associated with ANFACO-CECOPESCA, which, according to the association, demonstrates the sector's capacity to lead transformative investments.

"Our demand to develop a specific instrument, overcoming the European exception of Regulation 651/2014, has proven to be a complete success," stated Roberto Alonso, Secretary General of ANFACO-CECOPESCA. Alonso also expressed gratitude for the "commitment of MAPA, especially Minister Luis Planas, for pushing forward such a complex call."

Despite the "success" of the call, reflected in the "high number of quality projects submitted," the Secretary General lamented that "some projects could not access the aid exclusively due to budget limitations." In this regard, ANFACO-CECOPESCA believes it's time to consider a new call for proposals or to seek a modification of the European regulatory framework that would allow for the replication of this type of investment instrument.

ANFACO-CECOPESCA has reaffirmed its commitment to continue working to consolidate this public-private collaboration pathway, ensuring that the Spanish sea-industry sector remains a benchmark in transformation, sustainability, and value creation.
