NORWAY
Tuesday, March 05, 2024, 07:00 (GMT + 9)
Capelin fishing in the Barents Sea well under way at the end of the week and a lot of coalfish in the west.
Cape capelin
There has been good capelin fishing in the Barents Sea this week with a lot of activity at the weekend. A total of 19,356 tonnes have been registered. Last year, in the same week, only 1,030 tonnes were registered. The activity has mainly been about 30NM north of Sørøya. There has been fishing and exploration further east as well, but poor fishing in that area has meant that the fleet moved west during the weekend. The roe percentage has varied from 14-21%. At the time of writing, there are 22 vessels in the field fishing for capelin. When it comes to the various vessel groups, purse seiners account for 14,616 t, trawlers for 590 t, kist for 1,850 t and SUK for 308 t.

All catches have gone for consumption, and they have been delivered as far south as Florø.
With this week's entries, 21,083 tonnes of the quota of 117,300 have been taken, so there will still be a lot of activity up there when the coastal fleet also gets underway.
NVG herring
The winter fishing for NVG herring is coming to an end and this week 1,042 tonnes were registered from two different boats, one foreign and one Norwegian. One catch was taken west of Lofoten, the other west of Bodø.
Blue whiting
It has been a good week for blue whiting fishing this week with 56,101 tonnes registered, up 35,150 t from the previous week. Last year in the same week around 55,000 tonnes were also caught.
40,020 tonnes are taken in international waters and 16,161 in the EU zones. Most have been delivered in Norway, but some catches have also gone to Iceland and Denmark.
Now 251,000 have been taken from the quota of 372,641 tonnes, which means that 121,260 tonnes remain as several boats have finished their quotas.
Horse mackerel
There have been two small catches of horse mackerel this week totaling 26 tonnes from Kystbas and Molinergutt. These are fished on Nordmøre and south at Karmøy.
Finally, we expect great activity on capelin fishing in the coming week.
