  • The Chinese market remains the main market for domestic fish products.
  • Russian fish goes to China not only as a raw material - fillets, minced meat, canned and other finished products are in demand on the Chinese market
  • The vector of Russian fish exports is increasingly moving away from raw materials.

There is an expansion of the range, including through canned and finished products from herring, sardines, sardinella, sprats, salmon, crabs and other species.

Of course, the bulk of exports are products from the catches of the Far Eastern and Northern basins: pollock, herring, salmon, cod, flounder, haddock, crabs, shrimp, squid.

Russian Fishery Company replaces raw material exports to China with supplies of deep-processed fish products | In total, over the past 12 months, contracts have been signed to supply Chinese consumers with more than 5,000 tons of pollock fillets.(Photo: rcbc.ru)

However, the supply structure also includes carp, freshwater fish, non-food meal from aquatic biological resources.

At the end of 2022, 566 thousand tons of domestic fish products worth $1.5 billion were exported to China (excluding trade outside the customs area).

The total volume of Russian fish exports amounted to 2.3 million tons for 6.1 billion US dollars.

China and Russia continue to expand cooperation not only in joint trade. For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, face-to-face negotiations between the two countries were held on the development of cooperation in the fishing industry. From March 7 to March 10, 2023, the Thirty-first session of the Joint Russian-Chinese Commission for cooperation in the field of fisheries was held in Zhuhai (China). The parties successfully held negotiations on the issues of continuing cooperation in the field of protection and reproduction of aquatic biological resources in the border waters of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, the implementation of projects for scientific research of sturgeon and salmon species.

The Russian Party reported on the introduction of electronic certification confirming the legality of the origin of catches of aquatic biological resources and (or) products from them. This mechanism will simplify the procedure for importing Russian fish products to China.

Cooperation between Russia and China in the field of prevention, containment and liquidation of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing of living marine resources has been going on for many years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin the day beforenotedthat “Russian-Chinese relations today actually act as the cornerstone of regional and global stability, stimulate economic growth, serve as a guarantor of a positive agenda in international affairs. They are an example of harmonious creative cooperation between major powers.”
