This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and European Union waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1. ASIA

1.1 Japan

Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus)
Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii)

Prices

The average price at Japan Customs of frozen bluefin (HS 030345000 and 030346000) in June was JPY 2,453/kg, up 27% on that of May and 5% on that of June 2015. In the six months the average was JPY 1,756/kg, down 1% on that of the same period in 2015.

Markets

In the month analysed, imports reached 53 tonnes of frozen bluefin, worth JPY 130 million at Japanese Customs, down 82% in volume and 77% in value on those of the previous month and up 83% and 91% respectively on those of June 2015.

During the six months, imports reached 992 tonnes, worth JPY 1,742 million, down 70% in volume and value on those of the previous year.

In the period, Mexico sent 399 tonnes of frozen bluefin to Japan, worth JPY 645 million.

2. EUROPE

2.1 European Union

Landed volumes

Spain

On Marcabarna, during week 32, the most important drops were registered in volumes of fresh tuna, northern albacore, frozen shortfin mako and fresh tope shark. The most significant rise was reported by swordfish.

Supplies increased in shortfin mako and declined in the rest of tunid and squaliform species on Mercamadrid during week 32. The most significant drops were those in swordfish and headless albacore.

France

At French ports, during week 32, volumes of northern albacore increased by 81 tonnes, compared with the previous week. The main ports were Lorient, Le Guilvinec and Boulogne/Mer.

Italy

At Italian ports, during week 32, volumes of bullet tuna increased and those of picked dogfish and swordfish declined slightly. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on Bangkok remained at USD 1,400/t.

Spain

The price of yellowfin stayed at EUR 2,550/t EXW Spain. The price of skipjack > 1.8 kg remained at EUR 1,360/t EXW Spain.

As regards squaliform species, prices of swordfish were the same.

On Marcabarna, during week 32, the most important drops were registered in volumes of fresh shortfin mako, northern albacore, frozen tope shark slices and frozen whole tope shark. The most significant increases were those in fresh swordfish, fresh tuna, fresh tope shark and frozen shortfin mako.

On Mercamadrid, during week 32, prices increased in albacore and swordfish, due to the lower demand. Those of swordfish have remained the same.

The average price of northern albacore volumes was down EUR 0.17/kg at French ports, due to a rise in supplies.

Italy

Prices on Italian first-sale markets declined in the case of swordfish, due to a lower demand. The quotes of bullet tuna and Atlantic albacore increased due to a higher demnand.
