This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and European Union waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1.1 Japan

Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus)

Prices

The average price of Japanese imports of frozen bigeye reported JPY 722/kg in March, down 1% on that of the previous month and on that of March 2015. During the first three months of the year it averaged JPY 724/kg, up 3% on that of the same period last year.

Markets

In the month analysed, imports of frozen bigeye reached 7,286 tonnes, worth JPY 5.64 million, down 3% in volume and 4% in value on those of the previous month and they were down 6% in volume and 7% in value on those of March 2015.

During the first three months of the year, imports totaled 20,298 tonnes and JPY 14,699 million, up 14% in volume and 11% in value on those of the same period in 2015.

Taiwan contributed 45% (9,206 tonnes) and the Chinese Republic sent 31% (6,219 tonnes) of imports of the period.

2.1 European Union

Landed volumes

Spain

During week 19, supplies increased on Mercamadrid, in the case of fresh and frozen head-on albacore and fresh and frozen shortfin mako. Those of frozen and fresh headless albacore, frozen and fresh swordfish and fresh blue shark declined.

Italy

At Italian ports, during week 19, volumes of albacore, bullet tuna and swordfish declined, slightly in the latter. Volumes of picked dogfish were few. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on Bangkok remained at USD 1,650/kg.

Spain

In Spain, the price of yellowfin stayed at EUR 2,300/t EXW Spain. The price of skipjack > 10 kg remained at EUR 1,300/t EXW Spain.

On Mercamadrid, during week 19, prices declined in headless albacore and swordfish, due to the lower demand. Those of head-on albacore also dropped due to the rise in supplies.

Italy

Prices on Italian first-sale markets declined slightly in the case of swordfish, due to a lower demand. Those of Atlantic albacore, bullet tuna and picked dogfish increased because of low supplies.
