This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese, the European Union and American waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1. ASIA

1.1 Japan

Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis)
Albacore (Thunnus alalunga)
Yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)
Bluefin tuna (Thunnus Thynnus)
Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus)

Markets

Total imports of tuna in March, fresh and frozen, reached 16,725 tonnes, with a value at Japanese Customs of JPY 10,867 million. These figures are up 7% in volume and 9% in value on those of February and compared with those of March 2015, the volume is down 4% and the value is up by 3%.

Imports of fresh tuna during the month reached 2,432 tonnes with a value of JPY 2.68 million at Japanese Customs, up 61% in volume and 43% in value on those of the previous month, and up 60% in volume and 35% in value on those of March 2015.

As regards frozen tuna, imports during the month reported 14,293 tonnes, worth JPY 8,219 million at Japanese Customs.

These figures are up 1% in volume and value on those of the previous month and compared with those of March 2015, the volume is down 10% and so is the by 4%.

2.1 European Union

Landed volumes

Spain

On the wholesale market of Mercamadrid, during week 18, supplies of frozen and fresh shortfin mako declined. Those of the rest of tunid and squaliform species increased. The most important increases were those in frozen and fresh swordfish, and those in fresh and frozen headless albacore.

Italy

At Italian ports, during week 18, volumes of bullet tuna and albacore declined. Those of swordfish have increased slightly. There were hardly any volumes of picked dogfish. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on Bangkok increased to USD 1,650/kg.

Spain

In Spain, the price of yellowfin increased to EUR 2,300/t EXW Spain. The price of skipjack > 10 kg rose to EUR 1,300/t EXW Spain.

Prices of all tunid and squaliform species analysed increased on Mercamadrid during week 18, due to a higher demand. The most significant increases were registered in fresh and frozen head-on albacore.

Italy

Prices on Italian first-sale markets declined in the case of Atlantic albacore and bullet tuna, due to a lower demand. That of swordfish increased due to the higher demand.

3. NORTH AMERICA

3.1 United States

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius)

Prices

The average CIF price of headless and/or fresh gutted swordfish (HS 0302670090, former 0302692049) was USD 9,632/t at US Customs in February. This figure is down 5% on that of the previous month and 2% on that of February 2015. During the first two months the average was USD 9,854, down 1% on those of the same period in 2015.

Markets

In February, US imports of fresh swordfish reached 492 tonnes, worth USD 4,739,000 CIF declared at Customs.

These figures show a rise of 37% in volume and 30% in value compared with the previous month, and they are up 43% in volume and 40% in value on those of February 2015.

In the year, imports reported 851 tonnes and USD 8,386,000, up 34% in volume and 32% in value on those of 2014.

The main suppliers of fresh headless and/or gutted swordfish during the period were Sri Lanka, Australia, Brazil and Ecuador with 190, 127, 127 and 116 tonnes respectively.
