This report focuses on catches of tuna, shark and swordfish in Spanish and American waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

Landed volumes

Spain

On Mercamadrid, volumes of tunid and squaliform species dropped slightly, adding to the decline of the previous week. The most significant drop was that of frozen swordfish and the most important rise was that of fresh head-on albacore.

France

At French ports, during week 38, volumes of albacore increased by 15 tonnes. The main port was Port en Lorient.

Italy

At Italian ports, the most important variation was that in Atlantic albacore, by 2.4 tonnes, compared with the previous week. The most important volumes were landed at the port of Aci Trezza.

Prices

Prices of skipjack are still stable, both in Bangkok quoting at USD 1,600/t and in the Indian Ocean at USD 1,400/t.

Prices of yellowfin remained stable in all markets. On Manta it was at EUR 1,700/t. Catch volumes of the Indian ocean were at USD 2,000/t and on Abidjan they stayed at EUR 2,030/t.

Spain

In Spain prices of skipjack stayed at EUR 1,450/t CFR Spain and those of yellowfin at EUR 2,600/t CFR Spain.

On Mercamadrid, prices remained stable in all species, except for fresh albacore that reported a drop.

France

At French ports, prices of albacore declined by EUR 0.45/kg, due to a rise in supplies.

Italy

On Italian first-sale markets prices of bullet tuna dropped and those of swordfish increased slightly. That of Atlantic albacore remained steady.

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius)

Prices

During the second fortnight of September, the H&G from Central and South America, fresh, 100lb up, quoted at USD 10.25/kg, C&F Miami (USD 4.65/lb); the H&G from the same origin -50 to 99lb- quoted at USD 9.15/kg (USD 4.15/lb).

The average CIF price of headless and/or fresh gutted swordfish (HS 0302670090, former 0302692049) at US Customs in July was USD 10,235/t. This figure is up 11% on that of the previous month and 4% on that of July 2013. During the first seven months the average was USD 9,591, down 7% on those of the same period in 2013.

Markets

In July, US imports of fresh swordfish reached 891 tonnes, worth USD 9,119,000 CIF declared at Customs.

These figures show a rise of 22% in volume and 35% in value compared with the previous month, and they are down 4% in volume and similar to the value of those of July 2013.

In the period, imports reported 3,888 tonnes and USD 37,288,000, up 22% in volume and 14% in value on those of 2013.

The main suppliers of fresh headless and/or gutted swordfish during the four months were Ecuador, Panama and Costa Rica with 1,270, 569 and 462 tonnes respectively.
