This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and Spanish waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1. ASIA

1.1 Japan

Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus and Thunnus orientalis)
Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii)

Prices

The average CIF price of fresh bluefin imported by Japan in August was JPY 1,907/kg, up 8% on that of the previous month but down 5% on that of August 2013. During the first eight months, the average was JPY 1,620/kg, down 5% on that of the same period last year.

Markets

During August, about 378 tonnes of fresh bluefin were imported, worth JPY 721 million at Japan Customs.

These figures are down 38% in volume and 33% in value on those registered during the previous month. Compared with August 2013, imports fell 17% in volume and 21% in value.

In the period, imports reached 3,956 tonnes and JPY 6,409 million, down 7% in volume and 11% in value on those of the same period last year.

In the period the main origin of Japanese imports of northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and/or Thunnus orientalis) was Mexico with 1,323 tonnes and JPY 2,785 million, followed by Korea with 888 tonnes and JPY 594 million.

Australia has been the main supplier of southern bluefin so far, with 680 tonnes and JPY 1,213 million.

2. EUROPE

2.1 Spain

Landed volumes

Spain

In the wholesale market of Mercamadrid the incoming volumes of fresh and frozen shortfin mako have increased. Those of the rest of tunid and squaliform species declined. The most significant drop was reported by fresh albacore.

At French ports, during week 39, volumes of albacore increased by 106 tonnes. The main port was Les Sables D''olonne.

Italy

At Italian ports, volumes of all tunid and squaliform species declined. The most important drop was reported by bullet tuna. The most important volumes were registered at the ports of Civitanova Marche and San Benedetto del Tronto.

Prices

Prices of skipjack are stable both on the market of Bangkok, at USD 1,600/t, and in the Indian Ocean at USD 1,400/t.

Prices of yellowfin remained in all markets. On Manta it was at EUR 1,700/t. Catch volumes of the Indian ocean remained at USD 2,000/t and on Abidjan they stayed at EUR 2,030/t.

Spain

In Spain prices of skipjack stayed at EUR 1,450/t CFR Spain and those of yellowfin at EUR 2,600/t CFR Spain.

On Mercamadrid, prices of all species remained stable, except for fresh albacore which reported a rise in head-on albacore and a drop in headless albacore.
