Prices
At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in December 2013 was JPY 4,029/kg, similar to that of the previous month and up 36% on that of December 2012. in 2013, the price averaged JPY 3,735, up 7% on that of the year before.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 3,086/kg, up 6% on that of the previous month and down 2% on that of December 2012. During the year they averaged JPY 2,948, down 9% on those of 2012.

Markets
Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 379 tonnes and JPY 1,527 million, up 68% in volume and 69% in value compared with the previous month. They were up 8% in volume and 46% in value on those of the same month in 2012, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During the year, imports of the product from China grew 19% in volume and 27% in value compared with those of the previous year, while those of Taiwan dropped 37% in volume and 33% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 525 tonnes, worth JPY 1,620 million, up 29% in volume and 37% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with December 2012 they were up 51% in volume and 47% in value.

During the period, imports of processes eels from China dropped by 9% in volume and 17% in value compared with 2012.
