This market report focuses on catches and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as catches, prices and imports.

Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)

Prices

At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in November was JPY 4,013/kg, up 7% on that of the previous month and up 40% on that of November 2012. In the first eleven months, the price averaged JPY 3,710, up 5% on that of the same period in 2012.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 2,907/kg, up 3% on that of the previous month and 2% on that of November 2012. During the period they averaged JPY 2,938, down 9% on those of 2012.

Markets

Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 225 tonnes and JPY 903 million, up 36% in volume and 46% in value compared with the previous month. Compared with the same month in 2012, there was a rise of 9% in volume and 52% in value according to the preliminary figures of the Japanese Customs.

During the eleven months, imports of the product from China increased 20% in volume and 26% in value compared with those of 2012, while those of Taiwan dropped 30% in volume and 35% in value.

Imports of processed products reached 408 tonnes worth JPY 1,186 million in the month, down 1% in volume and up 2% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with November 2012 they were up 11% in volume and 13% in value.

During the period imports of processed products from China dropped 13% in volume and 21% in value from those of 2012.
