Prices
At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in April 2014 was JPY 4,100/kg, similar to that of the previous month and up 21% on that of April 2013. in January-April 2014, the price averaged JPY 4,079, up 18% on that of the year before.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 2,838/kg, up 1% on that of the previous month and down 8% on that of April 2013. During the year they averaged JPY 2,858, down 8% on those of 2013.

Markets
Imports of live eels for consumption during the month analysed totaled 380 tonnes and JPY 1,558 million, up 30% in volume and value compared with the previous month. They were up 8% in volume and 30% in value on those of the same month in 2012, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During the first four months of the year, imports of the product from China grew 10% in volume and 30% in value compared with those of the previous year, while those of Taiwan dropped 31% in volume and 15% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 1,617 tonnes, worth JPY 4,589 million, up 161% in volume and 163% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with April 2013 they were up 23% in volume and 13% in value.

During the period imports of processed products from China grew 12% in volume and 2% in value on those of 2013.
